The Cats visited the White House yesterday to see the President of the United States because they captured the Stanley Cup last season. The Hurricanes are first in the Metropolitan Division.
Carolina(29-15-4) was able to get a 1-0 lead with 1:25 remaining in the first period. Nikolaj Ellers released a forehand shot from the top of the crease for his 12th goal this season.
Florida(24-19-3) evened it up 1-1 at the 1:19 mark of the second period. Sandis Vilmanis carried the puck through the neutral zone and made a square pass at the Hurricanes blue line. Mackie Samoskevich pushed it from the top left circle and Uvis Balinskis blasted a one-time slap shot from the high slot for his second goal of the year. Vilmanis collected his first NHL point of his career on the play.
The Canes picked up two goals later in the second for a 3-1 advantage. Mark Jankowski scored with 6:50 to go and Alexander Nikishin scored with 3:32 left during a power play.
The Hurricanes blitzed the Panthers with six goals in the final period. Ellers added two more goals and got the hat trick to give them a 7-1 lead with 6:57 remaining.
