Florida had never trailed by three goals or more in consecutive games and end up victorious in both contests. The Panthers became the ninth club in NHL history to ever accomplish that. It was the first time that
Sam Reinhart faced his former team for the first time since he was traded back in July. He chalked up a career-high four points in the game.
In the first period, Buffalo(8-12-3) rolled out to a 1-0 lead at the 3:21 mark. Rasmus Dahlin angled a pass from the low left circle and former Panthers player Vinnie Hinostroza released a wrist shot from the slot area past Sergei Bobrovsky for his third goal of the campaign.
The Sabres got a two-goal lead at 7:41. Kyle Okposo brought the puck into the Panthers zone and made a lateral pass. Dylan Cozens put in a snap shot from the top right circle for his seventh goal this year.
It became 3-0 for Buffalo with 5:35 left in the first. Cozens dragged the puck through the low right circle and make a cross-ice pass. Hinostroza scored on a forehand shot from the left of the crease for his second tally of the contest and fourth goal this season.
Florida(16-4-3) made it 3-1 with 10:03 left in the second period. Jonathan Huberdeau backhanded a pass from behind the cage and Lucas Carlsson rifled a slap shot and it was redirected in by Reinhart.
The Sabres responded with 8:44 remaining to go up 4-1. Casey Mittelstadt received a lead pass on the left side, skated to the low left circle and snapped a shot for his first goal this year. Bobrovsky was replaced in net after the goal by Spencer Knight.
It became 4-2 with 7:28 to go in the second. Huberdeau sent the puck from the right wing to Carlsson on the right point. His snap shot with deflected in by Reinhart in the low slot for his second goal of the game and seventh goal of the season.
The Panthers closed it to 4-3 with 4:20 left in the frame. Huberdeau made a backhand pass from the right circle and Aaron Ekblad scored on a forehand shot from the low slot area.
The Cats tied it up 4-4 at the 1:07 mark of the third period. Ekblad put the puck in the net for a power-play goal on assists from Sam Bennett and MacKenzie Weegar.
Florida took their first lead of the contest 5-4 at 8:05. Carter Verhaeghe raced to behind the net, centered the puck and Anton Lundell ripped a shot from the top of the crease for his fourth tally this season.
Huberdeau added an empty-net goal with 1:23 left and Lundell put in an empty-net goal with five seconds remaining. Huberdeau tied his own career marks of four assists and five points in one contest. He also passed Radek Dvorak for second in Florida Panthers franchise history with 614 regular season games played.
