The United States were defeated by Japan 3-2 in the 2023 World Baseball Classic championship game at loanDepot park in Miami on Tuesday night. Japan captured their third World Baseball Classic title, which is the most in tournament history. They won the first two editions in 2006 and 2009.
USA, who were the reigning World Baseball Classic champions, scored first on the contest during the top of the second. Former Park Vista Cobras player Trea Turner belted a solo home run to left field on a 2-1 count.
Japan quickly tied it up 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Munetaka Murakami blasted a home run on the first pitch to right-center field.
They would load the bases later in the frame. Japan took their first lead 2-1 when Lars Nootbaar grounded out to first and Kaz Okamoto scored.
It became 3-1 Japan in the fourth inning. Okamoto lifted an 0-1 pitch to left-center field on a 0-1 count.
The USA trailed by3-2 during the eighth inning. Kyle Schwarber waited until the 10th pitch from Yu Darvish and he connected on a solo home run to right-center field on a 2-2 offering. Shohei Ohtani came in the top of the ninth inning and collected the save.
