United States Mows Down Paraguay

The United States opened up the 2026 World Cup with a 4-1 dominant win over Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium on Friday night. It was the most goals scored in a World Cup game by the United States. It was also the largest margin of victory for the U.S. since they accomplished it during the first World Cup in 1930.
It marked the 11th overall World Cup appearance by the U.S. in World Cup competition. The United States has reached the knockoff phase every time when they do not lose their first World Cup game in the tournament.
It turned out to be the first contest for the United States in Group D. They will later face Australia on June 19 in Seattle and Turkey in Los Angeles on June 25 in group play during the next two weeks.
Los Angeles held the 1994 World Cup Final game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena when the United States was the host nation. The FIFA does not allow a company naming rights on World Cup stadiums, such as SoFi Stadium.
In the first half, the United States jumped out to a 1-0 advantage just seven minutes into the game. Christian Pulisic dribbled down the left side of the penalty area through two defenders and passed the ball ahead. Weston McKinnie made a square pass to his right and Damian Bobadilla accidentally kicked the ball into his own cage for an own goal.
The United States expanded their lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute of play. Malik Tillman centered the ball from the left side. Folarin Balogun then one-timed a right-footed shot from 13 yards away.
The U.S. increased it to 3-0 during stoppage time at the end of the first half. Balogun brought the ball to the middle of the penalty area and lifted a 12-yard shot with his left foot into the top left corner of the net.
In the second half, Paraguay broke the shutout in the 73rd minute and they were down 3-1. Mauricio was able to get the tally with left-footed shot from 12 yards out.
The United States capped the game with a goal in stoppage time to conclude the second half. Giovanni Reyna dribbled forward several yards and zipped a 17-yard shot from the top of the penalty area with his outer-right foot into the left side of the cage
