Pete Banaszak Passes Away

One-time University of Miami Hurricanes running back Pete Banaszak passed away at the age of 82. He was with the Hurricanes for three seasons from 1963 to 1965.
Banaszak is best remembered for his 13-season stint of 192 combined regular season and postseason games with the Oakland Raiders from 1966 until 1978. He was selected in the fifth round of the 1966 AFL Draft by the Raiders. Banaszak scored two rushing touchdowns as Oakland won Super Bowl XI over the Minnesota Vikings in January 1977.
He led the National Football League with 16 rushing touchdowns in 1975. Banaszak is second all-time in Raiders franchise history with 47 rushing touchdowns behind Marcus Allen.
The NFL play he is associated with is called the Holy Roller in September 1978. He attempted to pick up a fumbled football from quarterback Ken Stabler and shoveled it ahead at least seven yards to tight end Dave Casper, who landed with the football in the end zone to defeat the San Diego Chargers with no time remaining in the game. The National Football League created a rule that no longer allows a player to intentionally advance a fumble ahead to a teammate.
