The Fort Lauderdale Strikers came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Tampa Bay Rowdies 3-2 on Wednesday night at Al Lang Stadium to win the Florida Derby. After losing the previous four Coastal Cups, the Strikers captured the silverware for the first time. Tampa Bay dominated the first forty minutes of the first half. They were able to get goals from Tamika Mkandawire in the 11th minute and Darel Russel in the 38th minute.
Fort Lauderdale closed the gap with two goals in the final five minutes of the half. Fifa Picault compiled both tallies during the 43rd and 44th minute. Shawn Chin, who assisted on the first two Strikers goals, scored the game winner in the 56th minute.
The Strikers and Rowdies came into this game tied in aggregate goals at 3-3. Tampa Bay won the first game at home 3-2 on May 24 while Fort Lauderdale put up a 1-0 shutout at Lockhart Stadium on August 2.
