The Florida Panthers announced that their next captain will be defenseman Willie Mitchell. He will become the eighth captain in franchise history. Previous captains for the club included Brian Skrudland, Scott Mellanby, Paul Laus, Pavel Bure, Olli Jokinen, Bryan McCabe and Ed Jovanovski.
Mitchell joins the Cats as a free agent in early July. He played for the Los Angeles Kings for the last four seasons. He captured two Stanley Cup championships with that team in 2012 and 2014. Mitchell had one goal and 11 assists in 76 games with the Kings during the 2013-14 campaign.
