Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad won the Calder Trophy on Wednesday night in Las Vegas for the best rookie in the National Hockey League during the 2014-15 season. He beat out Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames and Mark Stone of the Ottawa Senators for the award. He joins Panthers teammate Jonathan Huberdeau who won the honor in 2012-13.
Ekblad was the first overall pick by the Florida Panthers at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in Philadelphia. He played 81 games for the Cats this past season and set several franchise records with the club. They included 12 goals, 27 assists and 39 points as a Panthers rookie defenseman.
