Jaromir Jagr passed one-time teammate Paul Coffey for fifth all-time in NHL history with his 1,136th assist as the Florida Panthers lost to the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 at BB&T Center on Wednesday night. It was the first game of a three-game homestand for the club. Keith Yandle played in his 700th career game.
In the second period, Shawn Matthias burned his former team with a tally at 5:03 to give Winnipeg(19-19-3) a 1-0 lead. Adam Lowry won the face-off in the left circle and drew it back to Paul Postma at the left point. His slapshot was redirected in by Matthias from the slot area past Roberto Luongo.
The Jets made it 2-0 at the 7:24 mark. Bryan Little stripped Michael Matheson in the slot and passed it to his left. Patrik Laine then blasted a one-timer for his 21st goal of the season.
Jagr collected the milestone assist with 1:42 left in the second for Florida(16-15-8). He sent a lead pass to Greg McKegg in the neutral zone. He skated up the right side to the circle and snapped a shot by Connor Hellebucyk for his first goal of the year.
Winnipeg regained a two-goal cushion early in the third period at 2:46. Little was in the left corner and centered the puck to the middle. Nikolaj Ehlers received it and put in a wrist shot from the edge of the left circle.
The Jets added another goal with 7:55 remaining in the third. Jacob Trouba was to the left of the crease and sent a cross-ice pass to Mark Scheifele and he flipped in a backhand shot from the right of the crease.
