Goran Dragic Trade Negated

     The Miami Heat continued to clean house during the start of the free agency period on Sunday night. They were sending guard Goran Dragic to the Dallas Mavericks for future considerations, however the deal fell through.
     Dragic has been with the Heat for the past five seasons. He was injured for most of last season as he averaged 13.7 points in 36 games. Dragic participated in at least 70 games in the other three full seasons with Miami. His best season with the Heat was in 2016-17 when he averaged a career-high 20.3 points per game.

Miami Heat Get Jimmy Butler

     The Miami Heat began the NBA free agency period on Sunday night and acquired guard Jimmy Butler from the Philadelphia 76ers for guard Josh Richardson. It was a sign-and-trade deal between both clubs. Butler signed for the maximum with the Sixers which was a four-year contract for $141 million.
     Butler was picked up by Philadelphia from the Minnesota Timberwolves during the 2018-19 season. He averaged 18.2 points, 4.0 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game in 55 contests with the 76ers. Butler played his first six seasons in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls.

Sandy Alacantara Named All-Star

     Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara has been selected by the Major League Baseball league office to be part of the National League All-Star Team. There is at least one participant from each baseball club to be chosen for the mid-summer classic. The annual MLB All-Star Game will be held at Progressive Field in Cleveland on July 9.
     Alcantara was acquired by the Marlins from the St. Louis Cardinals for Marcel Ozuna in a five-player trade on December 14, 2017. He have been part of the Marlins squad for the past two seasons. Alcantara has a 4-7 record with a 3.86 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 16 starts in 2019.

Phillies End Losing Streak To Marlins

     The Miami Marlins began the second half of the 2019 regular season. They were rampaged by the Philadelphia Phillies 13-6 at Marlins Park on Sunday.

Panthers Trade James Reimer For Scott Darling

     The Florida Panthers traded James Reimer to the Carolina Hurricanes for Scott Darling and a 2020 sixth-round draft pick on Sunday. Both clubs exchanged experienced goalies in the deal.
     It will be a short stay for Darling with Florida as he was put on unconditional waivers. His final two years of his contract will be bought out by the Panthers.
     Reimer leaves the Panthers after three seasons with the team. He shared duties in net with the recently retired Roberto Luongo. Reimer slipped to a .900 save percentage along with a 3.09 goals-against-average and a 13-12-5 mark in 36 games last season.
     His best season with the team was in his first season in 2016-17. Reimer compiled a 18-6-5 record with a 2.56 goals-against-average and .923 save percentage in 43 games. He did have a 22-14-6 record, 2.99 goals-against-average and .913 save percentage in 44 games for his second season with the Cats in 2017-18.

Marlins Take Phillies

     The Miami Marlins got by the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6 on Saturday at Marlins Park. The Marlins continued their winning streak over the Phillies.

Panthers Acquire Dominic Toninato

     The Florida Panthers received forward Dominic Toninato from the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Jacob MacDonald. Toninato played two games with the Avs last season. He scored his first NHL goal on February 14, 2019.
     Toninato was with the Colorado Eagles of the American Hockey League in 2018-19. He had 14 goals and 15 assists in 59 games last season.

Marlins Top Phillies

     The Miami Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 at Marlins Park on Friday night. The Fish snapped a three-game losing streak and defeated the Phils for the fourth time in the last eight days.
     The Marlins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Brian Anderson doubled to deep center field which scored Harold Ramirez.
     Miami(31-49) got up 3-0 in the third inning. Anderson connected on a two-run homer to right field on a 2-1 pitch with Garrett Cooper scoring in front of him.
     In the fifth inning, Philadelphia(43-39) put up their only runs of the contest. Vince Velasquez smacked his first career major league home run on a 1-1 count.
     The Fish answered back in the bottom of the fifth. Cooper knocked in Miguel Rojas on a base hit into left field.
     Miami continued to pour it on during the seventh inning. J.T. Riddle smashed a solo home run on the first pitch he saw. Cooper later drove in Yadiel Rivera with a single to right-center field.

Josh Friedman Takes Time Off From WQAM

     Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM midday co-host Josh Friedman will be leaving the show on Friday for about a month due to knee replacement surgery. He had the same surgery when he was the evening co-host at Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM back in December 2017.
     Friedman was shifted to WQAM in early December 2018 from Entercom Communications sister-station 790 The Ticket. He joined former WQAM evening host Alex Donno to become the midday program after Orlando Alzugaray departed from the station.

Nationals Down Marlins

     The Washington Nationals completed a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins with an 8-5 victory on Wednesday night at Marlins Park. The Marlins will host the Philadelphia Phillies this weekend.

Duff Lindsey Retiring

     Duff Lindsey is retiring from his position as operations manager at Beasley Broadcasting in Boca Raton on June 30. He has been the operations manager for WSBR-AM, WHSR-AM and WWNN-AM since 2011.
     Lindsey was known best known for his work at Beasley Broadcasting in Miami. He replaced Andrew Ashwood as the program director of Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM in 1997. Lindsey was later elevated to operations manager at that station. He became an account executive at WQAM and WKIS-FM.
      He arrived in South Florida following a stint as a program director at WJHM-AM in Orlando. After working at Beasley Broadcasting Miami, he had a short tenure as a morning host and account executive at WFLL-AM in Fort Lauderdale.

Nationals Speed By Marlins

     The Miami Marlins continued their home stand with a 7-5 loss to the Washington Nationals at Marlins Park on Wednesday night. The Nats end up winning the three-game series.
     Miami(30-48) scored first in the third inning. Harold Ramirez knocked in Zac Gallen with a base hit to left field.
     Washington(39-40) exploded in the top of the sixth with four runs. Anthony Rendon singled into center field for Trea Turner to score. Two batters later, Matt Adams blasted a three-run bomer to right field on a 3-1 pitch as Adam Eaton and Turner both scored in front of him.
     Both clubs scored a bunch of runs during the ninth inning. The Nationals had Yan Gomes reach home on a wild pitch. Rendon hit a sacrifice fly to center which scored Gerardo Parra. Turner would make it a 7-1 when he touched home on a passed ball.
     The Marlins would not stop in the bottom of the frame as they compiled four runs. Bryan Holaday singled through the right side to score Ramirez. The Fish loaded the bases then Curtis Granderson lifted a three-run triple off the right-field wall to score Garrett Cooper, Neil Walker and Holaday.

Roberto Luongo Announces Retirement

     Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo announced his retirement from the National Hockey League on Wednesday. He ends his 19-season NHL career on his second stint with the Panthers.
     Lunogo finished near the top of NHL career goalie marks at third all-time in wins with 489, second with 1,044 games played, ninth with 77 shutouts and second all-time with 28,409 saves. He will be eligible for the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022 and is likely have his number 1 jersey retired in the future by the Panthers organization
     All the Florida Panthers franchise goalie records are held by him. Luongo had 572 games played, 230 wins, 38 shutouts, 16,068 saves, 13 assists, 75 single-season games played, 35 single-season victories, 2,303 single-season saves and seven single-season shutouts.    
     He was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 1997 NHL Draft at fourth overall. He played one season with the Islanders in 1999-2000 and was traded with Olli Jokinen to the Panthers for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha on June 24, 2000.
     Luongo played five seasons with Florida in his first stint with the club and the team never reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He was named a second-time NHL All-Star in 2004.
     He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in a five-player deal on June 23, 2006. Luongo helped that team to a Western Conference title in 2011. They lost in the Stanley Cup Final to the Boston Bruins in seven games.
     Luongo returned to Florida in a trade from Vancouver on March 4, 2013 for Jacob Markstrom and Shawn Mattias. He helped the Panthers win the Atlantic Division title in 2015-16 with a team-record 103 points. They fell in the first round to the Islanders in six games.

Nationals Scramble Marlins

     The Washington Nationals outscored the Miami Marlins 6-1 at Marlins Park on Tuesday night. The Fish had their four-game winning streak snapped.
     In the third inning, Washington(38-40) plated three runs. Juan Soto hit a single through the middle with the bases loaded to score Max Scherzer and Adam Eaton. Howie Kendrick followed with a fielder's choice to second for Anthony Rendon to cross the plate.
     The Nationals expanded their lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth. Park Vista High School grad Trea Turner blasted a three-run homer to left-center field on the first pitch. Victor Robles and Scherzer scored in front of him on the play.
     Miami(30-47) answered back in the bottom of the frame. Curtis Granderson knocked in Brian Anderson on a base hit into right.

Florida Panthers Schedule Released

     The Florida Panthers schedule for the 2019-20 season was officially released on Thursday. It will be the 26th season for the franchise in the National Hockey League and 21st season playing in Sunrise.
     The Panthers will host all their Atlantic Division foes twice and visit them twice. They include the Eastern Conference champion Boston Bruins, Atlantic Division champion Tampa Bay Lightning, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres.
     The Cats will face Metropolitan Division clubs three times. They will play the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and Washington Capitals twice at home and once away. The Panthers will take on the New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets once in Sunrise and twice on the road.
     Florida will play each Western Conference team once at home and once away. It includes a home date with the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues on March 21.
     The Panthers will play just four home games in October and January along with six game in February. They have 10 home games in the month of December.  Of their 41 home games this season, 14 contests will be on Saturdays, 12 on Thursdays and five on Sundays.
     They will begin the 2019-20 campaign at Tampa Bay on October 3 and have their home opener against the Lightning on October 5. The Cats finish the regular season at home on April 4 versus the Washington Capitals.

Andrew Kalb Exits ABC Radio

     Former Miami radio producer Andrew Kalb has left ABC Radio. He has been part of that company for the past 22 years and recently was the executive director of programming and news coverage.
     Kalb was a producer for News Radio 610 WIOD-AM during the 1990s. He helped out with their evening program Sportstalk 610 which was hosted by numerous people that included Hank Goldberg, Jim Mandich, Joe Zagacki and Jeff DeForest. Kalb was also a sports reporter for the station.

Marlins Sweep Phillies

     The Miami Marlins knocked off the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park. The Fish were able to sweep the three-game series against the Phils. The Marlins increased their winning streak to four games while the Phillies have fallen in their last seven consecutive contests.
     Both teams scored in the first inning. The Marlins got an RBI-single by Starlin Castro into center field to score Miguel Rojas. The Phillies jumped over them in the bottom of the frame as Jean Segura knocked in Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins on a base hit to left.
     Miami(30-46) responded fast in the following inning to take the lead 3-2. J.T. Riddle sliced a two-run homer to right on a 0-1 pitch. They added another run in the third inning when Brian Anderson grounded into a double play for Harold Ramirez to cross the plate.
     It became a four-run margin for the Marlins in the top of the fifth. They picked up back-to-back solo home runs from Garrett Cooper and Brian Anderson over the center-field fence.
     Philadelphia(39-38) attempted to make a late comeback in the game. Jay Bruce drove in Harper with a sacrifice fly to center during the eighth inning. Sean Rodriguez connected with a sacrifice fly into center field which brought in Cesar Hernandez.

Marlins Shake Off Phillies

     The Miami Marlins escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park. The Marlins will take the three-game series. The Phillies have lost six straight games and eight of their last 10 contests.

Florida Panthers Finish 2019 NHL Draft

     The Florida Panthers completed the second day of the 2019 NHL Draft held at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Saturday. The second round through the seventh round was announced.
     The Panthers made nine selections throughout the entire 2019 NHL Draft. It was the most for the club in a single draft since 2011 when they had 10 picks.
     Florida selected defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok in the second round with the 52nd overall pick. Kolyachonok played 53 games with the Flint Firebirds and compiled four goals with 25 assists.
     The Cats had two picks in the third round. They went with defenseman John Ludvig with the 69th overall selection and forward Cole Schwindt with the 81st overall selection. Ludvig had five goals and 13 assists in 58 games last season with the Portland Winterhawks. His father Jan Ludvig played 314 NHL games with the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres. Schwindt reached 19 goals and 30 assists with the Mississauga Steelheads in 2018-19.
     Other picks by the Panthers included defenseman Carter Berger in the fourth round from the Victoria Grizzlies, forward Henrik Rybinski of the Seattle Thunderbirds in the fifth round, forward Owen Lindmark in the fifth round from the United States National Team Development Program, forward Greg Meireles of the Kitchener Rangers in the sixth round and forward Matthew Wedman from the Seattle Thunderbirds in the seventh round.

Marlins Hold Off Phillies

     The Miami Marlins defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 at Citizens Bank Park on Friday night. It was the first game of a three-game series.
     The Marlins make it 1-0 in the second inning. Bryan Holaday popped a solo home run to left-center field on a 2-0 pitch.
     Philadelphia(39-36) evened it up 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Bryce Harper stole second and then Roman Quinn stole home for a double steal while Jay Bruce was at-bat.
     In the sixth inning, Miami(28-46) regained the lead. Brian Anderson scored when Scott Kingery made a throwing error on a fielder's choice play.

Florida Panthers Draft Spencer Knight

     The 2019 NHL Draft began at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Friday night. The Florida Panthers selected goalie Spencer Knight with the 13th overall pick in the first round. Rounds two through seven will be held on Saturday.
     Knight had a team-record 59 career wins with the United States National Team Development Program and had a 32-4-1 record and a 2.35 goals-against-average this season. He had a 1.51 goals-against-average and a .936 save percentage at the U-18 World Championship.
     It is expected that Knight will play next season with Boston College. Knight was the first goaltender in Florida Panthers history to be selected in the first round.

NHL Announce Florida Panthers Home Opener

     The National Hockey League announced that the Florida Panthers will play their home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 5. They will open the 2019-20 campaign against the Bolts on October 3 at Amalie Arena.
     Both clubs will face each other two other times later in the season. The Lightning hosted the Panthers last year to begin the 2018-19 season.

Marlins Beat Cardinals

     The Miami Marlins topped the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 in 11 innings on Thursday night at Busch Stadium. It was the second straight contest that went into extra innings. Both clubs were able to split the four-game series.

Miami Heat Draft Tyler Herro

     The Miami Heat selected guard Tyler Herro with the 13th overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft. The draft was held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
     Herro played only one season of college basketball at the University of Kentucky. He averaged 14 points-per-game in 37 games in 2018-19.
     The Heat had one pick during the second round. They chose Stanford University forward K.Z. Okpala with the 32nd overall selection.

Cardinals Get By Marlins

     The St. Louis Cardinals edged the Miami Marlins 2-1 in 11 innings at Busch Stadium on Wednesday night. The two previous games between both clubs in the four-game series were back-to-back shutouts.
     St. Louis(37-35) moved ahead 1-0 during the bottom of the sixth. Dexter Fowler got a base hit into left field to score Harrison Bader.
     Miami(26-45) tied the contest up 1-1 in the eighth inning. Miguel Rojas drove in Jorge Alfaro with a single to right field.
     The Cardinals wrapped up the game in the bottom of the 11th. Paul Goldschmidt blasted a solo home run to left field on a 2-2 pitch for his 14th homer of the season.

Aleksander Barkov Wins Lady Byng Trophy

     Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for the 2018-19 season. The award is given to the NHL player for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct. It takes into consideration tremendous offensive impact while not committing penalties.
     Barkov played in all 82 games for the Panthers this season. He had 35 goals and 61 assists for 96 points and compiled just eight penalty minutes. Barkov just finished his sixth season with the club.
     It was the third time that Barkov was nominated for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. Brian Campbell was the only previous Florida player to win the trophy in 2011-12.

Marlins Storm By Cardinals

     The Miami Marlins blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 6-0 on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. It was the second game of a four-game series between both clubs.
     The Marlins waited until the fifth inning to break the scoreless tie. Starlin Castro bashed a solo home run barely over the left-field wall on a 1-0 pitch.
     Miami(26-45) make it 3-0 in the top of the seventh. They got a solo homer from Brian Anderson to left on a 1-2 count which brought in Garrett Cooper.
     St. Louis(37-35) allowed three more runs in the eighth inning. Miguel Rojas knocked in J.T. Riddle with a double to deep left field. Two batters later, Cooper singled into left field to score Rojas and Harold Ramirez.

WQAM Middays Adds Dan Day

     The Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM midday show with Alex Donno and Josh Friedman recently added Dan Day as their producer and midday sports anchor. He was working the evening shift as a producer and sports anchor since earlier this year.
     Day had previous radio experience outside of South Florida. He worked at WDGL-FM in Baton Rouge as a disc jockey, producer and weekly podcast host from 2012 to May 2019. Day was a disc jockey at KXNA-FM in Arkansas prior to that.

WQAM Shifts Alex Solana

     Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM recently moved Alex Solana to become the afternoon sports anchor and afternoon producer for the Hochman and Crowder Show with Marc Hochman and Channing Crowder. He replaced Erick Falero, who left the station on May 31.
     Solana has climbed up the ladder at WQAM over the past couple of years. He started as a board operator and assistant producer on The Big O Show with Orlando Alzugaray. He was elevated to producer, midday show sidekick and midday sports anchor on the program. Solana continued that role when Alex Donno and Josh Friedman became the midday show co-hosts in early December 2018. Dan Day takes over the midday duties for Solana.

Cardinals Hook Marlins

     The St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Miami Marlins 5-0 at Busch Stadium on Monday night. Both clubs faced each other last week in Miami. The Fish have lost nine of their last 11 games.
     St. Louis(37-34) picked up the first run of the contest in the third inning. Matt Carpenter smacked a solo home run to center field on a 0-1 pitch.
     The Cardinals got a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Carpenter pushed a bunt through the open left side of the infield into left for a double. Paul DeJong came up next and hit a ball into shallow center field where Starlin Castro was unable to make the catch for an error and Carpenter crossed the plate.
     Miami(25-45) gave up three more runs in the eighth inning. Dexter Fowler powered a three-run homer to right field on a 0-1 count with Carpenter and DeJong scoring in front of him.

Marlins Dropped By Pirates

     The Marlins ended a nine-game home stand with a 5-4 loss the Pittsburgh Pirates at Marlins Park on Sunday. The Marlins have fallen eight of their last 10 games and head for St. Louis to face the Cardinals.
     Pittsburgh(32-39) got out of the gate first during the top of the fourth inning. Jung Ho Kang lined a double down the left-field line with two out for Josh Bell and Colin Moran to score.
     Miami(25-44) bounced back quickly in the bottom of the fourth with four runs against Pirates starting pitcher Chris Archer. Harold Ramirez belted a 2-1 pitch over the left-center field wall for a three-run homer. Garrett Cooper and Brian Anderson touched the plate before him. Four batters later, Sandy Alcantara got a base hit to right-center field that brought in J.T. Riddle for a 4-2 lead.
     In the sixth inning, the Pirates closed the gap. Pinch-hitter Corey Dickerson knocked in Gregory Polanco with a double to left field.
     The Bucs got production in the seventh and retook the lead 5-4. Melky Cabrera tripled to right field and Bryan Reynolds scored. Bell followed with a double into left to score Cabrera.

Pirates Posted By Marlins

     The Miami Marlins came back with a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night at Marlins Park. The Fish finish their nine-game home stand on Sunday.
     In the third inning, the Bucs moved ahead 1-0. Kevin Newman grounded into a fielder's choice for Elias Diaz to score.
     Pittsburgh(31-39) compiled two runs in the top of the fourth. Josh Bell singled to left field and Starling Marte crossed the plate. Colin Moran would then score on a double by Corey Dickerson to deep center field.
     Miami(25-43) rebounded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Harold Ramirez knocked in Garrett Cooper with a base hit into left field. Anderson would score on an Adam Frazier throwing error at second when J.T. Riddle was at-bat. Alfaro capped the inning as he singled into right which brought in Ramirez to make it 3-3.
     The Fish took their first lead of the contest in the fifth inning. Starlin Castro grounded out to third and Cooper reached home.

Pirates Bash Marlins

     The Pittsburgh Pirates routed the Miami Marlins 11-0 at Marlins Park on Friday night. The Marlins have lost seven of their last eight games.

Danny Garcia WQAM Sports Anchor

     Danny Garcia has added duties as the evening sports anchor at Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM. He returned to that station in 2018 as a producer.
     His first stint at WQAM was as a midday producer for the Michael Irvin Show in the early 2010s. He expanded his role and became the late night basketball co-host with Danny Rabinowitz on Inside The Paint from January 2012 until June 2012. Garcia moved on to 640 Sports WMEN-AM in July 2012 and became the morning producer for Sid Rosenberg. He was a weekend co-host there for several months beginning in August 2012. Garcia later was shifted to the midday producer position and worked with Andy Slater. He went to television at WFOR-TV Channel 4 in Miami as a video editor.

Truist New Name Of Sunrise Arena

     The home of the Florida Panthers in Sunrise will no longer be called the BB&T Center. It will go by a new name called Truist. BB&T and SunTrust are expected to be merged in the near future and be known at Truist Bank.
     The Sunrise arena opened up in October 1998 and will have their fifth different sponsor name on the venue. The name of the arena has been National Car Rental Center(1998-2002), Office Depot Center(2002-2005), BankAtlantic Center(2005-2012), BB&T Center(2012-2019) and now Truist.

West Palm Beach Ratings May 2019

     Ratings for West Palm Beach sports format radio stations were issued. ESPN West Palm 106.3 WUUB-FM was not registered in the monthly ratings and does not subscribe.
     640 The Hurricane WMEN-AM remained at a 0.4 for the second straight period. The New York Yankees continued with a great start to the regular season.
     Sports Radio 1230 The Zone WBZT-AM finished with a 0.0 for the ninth consecutive month. The Miami Marlins began the season awful and had the worst record in the National League.

Yamamoto Leads Marlins Past Cardinals

     Marlins starting pitcher Jordan Yamamoto made his major-league debut as Miami beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 at Marlins Park on Wednesday night. Yamamoto allowed his first hit in the fourth inning.
     The Marlins got on board in the opening frame. Brian Anderson got a single into center field for Garrett Cooper to score.
     Miami(24-42) compiled four more runs in the second inning and had a five-run margin. Cooper blasted a grand-slam homer to left-center field on a 0-1 pitch. Martin Prado, Bryan Holaday and Curtis Granderson scored in front of him on the play.
     The Fish added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Yamamoto hit a sacrifice bunt and Rojas crossed the plate.
     St. Louis(33-33) surrendered three more runs in the eighth inning. Granderson cranked a three-run home run to right field on a 1-2 count with Holaday and J.T. Riddle scoring.

Florida Panthers Release Preseason Schedule

     The Florida Panthers have released their 2019-20 preseason schedule. They will be playing just two games at home.
     The Panthers begin with their annual doubleheader contest in Nashville on September 16 against the Nashville Predators. They play their next two games versus the Montreal Canadiens in New Brunswick for the NHL annual Kraft Hockeyville Canada on September 18 and then face the Habs at Bell Centre on September 19. The Cats next take on the Dallas Stars on September 21 in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the second straight year.
     Florida returns home and challenges the Tampa Bay Lightning in Sunrise on September 24 and September 26. The Panthers visit Amalie Arena and face the Bolts on September 28 to end the preseason.

Miami New Times Announce Sports Awards

     The Miami New Times released their Best Of Awards for 2019. Several local sports announcers were named.
     Florida Panthers television play-by-play announcer Steve Goldstein was announced as best sports announcer. He has been associated with Florida Panthers broadcasts either on radio or television since 1997. Goldstein also works as a news anchor and sports anchor at CBS 4 Miami. Goldstein began in South Florida at Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM during the mid 1990s.
     Best radio personality went to Andy Slater, who is currently the mid-afternoon host on 640 The Hurricane WMEN-AM. He hosted a mid-afternoon show with Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM from January 2014 until July 2018. He was a sports talk host on 640 Sports from 2008 until December 2013.
     Steve Shapiro was named best sports anchor. He is currently a sports anchor at WSVN-TV Channel 7 in Miami. Shapiro has worked in the Miami market for almost 30 years as he had stints at WCIX-TV Channel 6 and WFOR-TV Channel 4.

Cardinals Fly By Marlins

     The St. Louis Cardinals got by the Miami Marlins 7-1 at Marlins Park on Tuesday night. The Marlins have fallen in their last six games. 
     In the second inning, the Redbirds struck first. Harrison Bader tripled into left-center field past Curtis Granderson for Kolten Wong to cross the plate.
     It was tied by Miami(23-42) in the bottom of the fourth. Miguel Rojas knocked in Harold Ramirez with a base hit to center.
     St. Louis(33-32) took a 3-1 lead during the top of the sixth. Yadier Molina lined out to short, Rojas made a error throwing the ball to first and Paul Goldschmidt scored from third. The Cardinals later loaded the bases and Bader walked for Marcell Ozuna to reach home.
     The Cardinals extended the gap to 6-1 in the eighth inning. Dexter Fowler singled to center field for Molina to score. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Jose Martinez drove in Wong and Fowler on a base hit to right.
     Ozuna added a solo home run to right field on a 0-1 pitch for St. Louis. It was his 18th homer of the season and he is now tied for first all-time with 49 home runs in Marlins Park. 

Miami Ratings May 2019

     There were changes in the ratings among the sports format radio stations in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market. The top three competitors in the region showed increases over the previous period.
     Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM rose from a 0.8 to a 0.9 in May and finished alone or tied on top for the fifth straight month. The use of ESPN Radio broadcasts of the NBA Playoffs and Major League Baseball helped.
     Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM saw an increase from a six-year low of a 0.5 to a 0.6 in the period. They accomplished this with their weekday lineup and no game broadcasts during the month.
      Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM moved up to a 0.3 after five consecutive months with a 0.2 rating. The addition of The Greek in mid-afternoons has helped the station even with the bad start by the Miami Marlins.
     640 The Hurricane WMEN-AM stayed at a 0.1 for the fourth consecutive period. The impressive start over the first two months of the regular season by the New York Yankees has caused a local buzz.

ESPN Deportes 990 To Flip Sports Format

     ESPN Deportes 990 WMYM-AM in Miami will soon change their format from a Spanish-language sports format. The ESPN Deportes Radio network, based in Coral Gables, is expected to stop on September 8.
     ESPN Deportes Radio has used ESPN Deportes 990 as their flagship station for their national network. Florida Panthers home games were broadcast on the station with play-by-play announcer Arley Londono and game analyst Octavio Sequera from November 2016 to April 2017.
     Another South Florida radio station will also be affected. Good Karma Brands uses the ESPN Deportes Radio network at ESPN Deportes 760 WEFL-AM in West Palm Beach. The station flipped from a English-language sports format to a Spanish-language sports format in September 2013.

Cardinals Outhustle Marlins

     The St. Louis Cardinals stopped the Miami Marlins 4-1 on Monday night at Marlins Park. The Cardinals, who were swept over the weekend by the Chicago Cubs, ended a three-game losing streak. The Marlins extended their losing streak to five games.
     In the fourth inning, St. Louis(32-32) got out in front 1-0. Former Marlin Marcell Ozuna scored on a double by Yairo Munoz to left field.
     The Redbirds make it 4-0 in the top of the sixth. Kolten Wong hit a sacrifice bunt and Jorge Alfaro made a throwing error to first for Paul Goldschmidt and Ozuna to score. Two batters later, Harrison Bader knocked in Wong on a sacrifice fly to center field.
     Miami(23-40) would get their only run of the contest in the seventh inning. Alfaro grounded out to short and Harold Ramirez crossed the plate.

Marlins Lose To Braves

     The Miami Marlins could not handle a four-run lead in the ninth inning and fell to the Atlanta Braves 7-6 in 12 innings at Marlins Park on Sunday. The Marlins have lost their last four games. The Braves swept the Marlins in Miami for the second time this season.
     Things started off great for Miami(23-40) in the opening frame. Austin Dean led off with a solo home run to right field on a 2-0 count.
     Atlanta(36-29) got unusual production in the second inning to make it 1-1. Max Fried doubled to deep right field to score Matt Joyce.
     In the fifth inning, the Marlins added two runs. Bryan Holaday ripped a double to the left-field wall and Martin Prado scored. Two batters later, Miguel Rojas reached home on a base hit by Dean to shallow left.
     The Fish expanded their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Dean knocked in Rojas on a single to left-center field. They later had the bases loaded and Starlin Castro got an infield hit to score Dean.
     The Braves pulled off four runs in the ninth inning and remained in the game. After Tyler Flowers scored on a balk, Ronald Acuna Jr. smashed a 0-1 pitch over the left-center field fence for a three-run homer to tie the contest 5-5. Joyce and Johan Carmago scored in front of him on the play.
     Atlanta was able to have the bases loaded with two out in the top of the 10th. Charlie Culberson walked and Ozzie Albies came in from third for a 6-5 lead.
     The Marlins matched it in the bottom of the frame. Martin Prado connected with a double to center field which scored Harold Ramirez.
     In the 12th inning, the Bravos regained the lead. Albies scored on a Joyce single to left field.

Braves Edge Marlins

     The Atlanta Braves got a 1-0 win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday at Marlins Park. Miami(23-39) has been outscored 8-1 in the last two games.
     Atlanta(35-29) scored the only run of the contest in the seventh inning. Tyler Flowers hit a sacrifice fly to right field for Austin Riley to cross the plate.

Marlins Ink Yangervis Solarte

     The Miami Marlins signed infielder/outfielder Yangervis Solarte on Friday. It is a minor-league deal for the journeyman.
     Solarte began his career in the majors with the New York Yankees in 2014. He followed that with over three seasons with the San Diego Padres. Solarte played for the Toronto Blue Jays last season and participated in 28 games with the San Francisco Giants in 2019.

Braves Bust Marlins

     The Atlanta Braves came within two outs of a shutout as they topped the Miami Marlins 7-1 at Marlins Park on Friday night. The Marlins returned home after playing 13 of their last 16 games on the road.
     Freddie Freeman homered on the first pitch to right field for Atlanta(34-29) in the first inning. Dansby Swanson was able to score in front of him for a 2-0 lead.
     In the third inning, the Braves made it a three-run gap. Ronald Acuna Jr. singled to deep left field and Ozzie Albies scored.
     It became 4-0 for the Bravos in the third inning. Nick Markakis scored on a base hit by Albies to right-center field.
     The momentum stayed with Atlanta in the top of the fourth with two more runs. Acuna connected with a solo home run to right-center field on a 3-2 count. Two batters later, Freeman knocked in Swanson with a double to deep right-center.
     The Braves increased their margin to 7-0 in the following frame. Acuna put a single into shallow right field to bring in Albies.
     Miami(23-38) broke the shutout in the ninth inning. Starlin Castro drove in Curtis Granderson with a base hit to shallow center field.

Brewers Mix Marlins

     The Milwaukee Brewers avoided a three-game sweep with a 5-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Thursday at Miller Park. The Marlins finished a stretch in which they played 13 of their last 16 games on the road.
     Milwaukee(35-28) rocketed out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Christian Yelich burned his former club with a two-run homer to right-center field on the first pitch as Lorenzo Cain scored in front of him. Three batters later, Mike Moustakas hammered a solo home run to left-center field on the initial pitch.
     It became a four-run lead for the Brewers in the third inning. Moustakas hit his second home run of the contest on a 1-2 count.
     Miami(22-37) compiled their only tally of the game in the top of the sixth. Garrett Cooper drove in Rosell Herrera with a single into left-center field.
     In the seventh inning, Milwaukee made it 5-1. Cain crossed the plate when Ryan Braun had an infield hit to the right side.

Marlins Slam Brewers

     The Miami Marlins took care of the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3 at Miller Park on Wednesday night. The Fish have won four straight games and 13 of their last 18. The Brewers have been outscored 24-3 by Miami in the last two contests.
     The Marlins got ahead 1-0 in the first inning. Starlin Castro grounded out to short for Curtis Granderson to score.
     Milwaukee(34-28) evened it up in the bottom of the second. Orlando Arcia doubled to deep center field for Mike Moustakas to reach home.
     Miami(23-36) broke it open during the top of the third. Brian Anderson smashed a grand-slam homer over the left-center field fence on the first pitch. Sandy Alcantara, Granderson and Garrett Cooper all scored on the play.
     In the fifth inning, the Fish extended their margin to 6-1. Castro hit a sacrifice fly to left and Anderson crossed the plate.
     The Marlins added two more runs in the eighth inning. Bryan Holaday drove in J.T. Riddle and Miguel Rojas with a base hit into left field.
     The Brewers compiled a couple of runs in the bottom of the ninth. Yasmani Grandal lifted a two-run homer to left-center field on the initial pitch with Hernan Perez scoring in front of him.

Florida Panthers Name Coaching Staff

     The Florida Panthers announced their coaching staff for the upcoming 2019-20 season that will work alongside Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville. The assistant coaches named were Mike Kitchen, Derek MacKenzie and Andrew Brunette. Robb Tallas remains as goaltending coach.
     It is a return for Kitchen to the Panthers organization. He was an assistant coach with the club from 2007-08 until 2009-10. Kitchen joined Quenneville as an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks and they captured three Stanley Cup titles in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He was also part of the coaching staff under Quenneville with the St. Louis Blues from 1998 to 2003.
     MacKenzie just finished his 17-year NHL career with the Panthers last season. He was injured during the first game of the season against the Tampa Bay Lightning and never played another contest during the campaign. MacKenzie was the Florida Panthers captain for several seasons and relinquished the role to Aleksander Barkov prior to the 2018-19 season. He played five seasons with the Cats.
     Brunette once played one season with Quenneville. He had him as his head coach with the Blackhawks in 2011-12. Brunette had been working in hockey operations with the Minnesota Wild since he retired in February 2013 as an advisor, assistant coach and assistant general manager.

Marlins Pound Brewers

     The Miami Marlins blasted the Milwaukee Brewers with a 16-0 shutout victory on Tuesday night at Miller Park. The Marlins have prevailed in 12 of their last 17 games.

Miami Dolphins On Magazine Covers

     The annual preview of pro football magazines have rolled out over the past week. There were several Miami Dolphins on different magazine covers.
     Linebacker Kiko Alonso appeared on the cover of Athlon Sports NFL magazine. Wide receiver DeVante Parker showed up on the Lindy's Sports magazine cover. Cornerback Street & Smith has cornerback Xavien Howard on the cover.

Locals On Phil Steele Magazine Cover

     Several former South Florida high school football players appear on the magazine cover of the 2019 Phil Steele College Football Preview. A couple of them show up on the Florida regional magazine cover.
     Former Lake Worth Trojans defensive lineman Jonathan Garvin appears. He currently is with the University of Miami Hurricanes.
     University of Florida Gators defensive back C.J. Henderson also shows up. He played high school football with the Columbus Explorers.

Marlins Burn Padres

     The Miami Marlins pounded the San Diego Padres 9-3 at Petco Park on Sunday to take the three-game series. The Marlins, who have won 11 of their last 16 games, next face the Brewers in Milwaukee. 
     In the second inning, Miami(21-36) broke out to a 2-0 lead. Jorge Alfaro blasted a two-run homer to center field on a 3-1 pitch with Martin Prado scoring in front of him. Garrett Cooper added a solo home run to center field on a 2-2 count during the top of the third. 
     The Marlins expanded it to a five-run margin in the fourth inning. Alfaro ripped a double to the right-field fence which brought home Harold Ramirez and Prado.
     The Fish made it 7-0 in the top of the fifth. Cooper scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Starlin Castro. Ramirez then drove in Brian Anderson with a single to center.
     San Diego(30-29) surrendered another two runs in the seventh and trailed by nine runs. Castro lined a double down the left-field line into the corner and Anderson raced home. Ramirez came up next with a base hit into right-center field for Castro to cross the plate.
     The Padres cut the deficit late in the contest. Hunter Renfroe blasted a solo home run to left-center field in the bottom of the seventh and hit a two-run homer to left-center in the ninth inning.

Marlins Race By Padres

     The Miami Marlins moved by the San Diego Padres 9-3 on Saturday night at Petco Park. The Fish have won three of their last five games.
     San Diego(30-28) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Josh Naylor connected with a two-run homer to right field on 2-2 count. Wil Myers was able to score in front of him.
     Miami(20-36) roared back with five runs in the top of the fourth. Harold Ramirez doubled to left field for Garrett Cooper and Brian Anderson to score. Martin Prado later drove in Starlin Castro with a base hit into center field. Miguel Rojas followed with a single to right which scored Ramirez. Cooper came up for the second time in the inning and knocked in Rojas on a base hit to right.
     The Marlins expanded the gap to 7-2 in the sixth inning. Bryan Holaday smacked a two-run homer to left field on a 3-2 pitch.
     The Padres got their final run of the contest in the bottom of the frame. Eric Hosmer got a single up the middle and Greg Garcia scored.
