The St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Miami Marlins 5-0 at Busch Stadium on Monday night. Both clubs faced each other last week in Miami. The Fish have lost nine of their last 11 games.
St. Louis(37-34) picked up the first run of the contest in the third inning. Matt Carpenter smacked a solo home run to center field on a 0-1 pitch.
The Cardinals got a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Carpenter pushed a bunt through the open left side of the infield into left for a double. Paul DeJong came up next and hit a ball into shallow center field where Starlin Castro was unable to make the catch for an error and Carpenter crossed the plate.
Miami(25-45) gave up three more runs in the eighth inning. Dexter Fowler powered a three-run homer to right field on a 0-1 count with Carpenter and DeJong scoring in front of him.
