The Florida Panthers announced their coaching staff for the upcoming 2019-20 season that will work alongside Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville. The assistant coaches named were Mike Kitchen, Derek MacKenzie and Andrew Brunette. Robb Tallas remains as goaltending coach.
It is a return for Kitchen to the Panthers organization. He was an assistant coach with the club from 2007-08 until 2009-10. Kitchen joined Quenneville as an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks and they captured three Stanley Cup titles in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He was also part of the coaching staff under Quenneville with the St. Louis Blues from 1998 to 2003.
MacKenzie just finished his 17-year NHL career with the Panthers last season. He was injured during the first game of the season against the Tampa Bay Lightning and never played another contest during the campaign. MacKenzie was the Florida Panthers captain for several seasons and relinquished the role to Aleksander Barkov prior to the 2018-19 season. He played five seasons with the Cats.
Brunette once played one season with Quenneville. He had him as his head coach with the Blackhawks in 2011-12. Brunette had been working in hockey operations with the Minnesota Wild since he retired in February 2013 as an advisor, assistant coach and assistant general manager.
