Former 560 WQAM-AM executive Bob McKay passed away late last week. He was known mostly as the program director for Kiss County 99.9 WKIS-FM from 1985 to 2000. He eventually became the program director for WXTU-FM in Philadelphia from 2000 to 2009.
McKay worked in several positions at WQAM when it was owned by Sunshine Wireless Company. He was the operations manager at that station in the early 1990s. McKay was the program director there when they started to implement a talk and sports format in January 1992. It included general talk shows with Joey Reynolds in morning drive and Rush Limbaugh in the midday slot along with sports talk shows with John Moynihan in afternoon drive and Ed Kaplan in late nights. WQAM had other on-air talent during that time which included Phil Latzman, Ed Berliner, Phil Schoen and producer Stu Opperman. They also were in the flagship radio station of the Miami Heat and had University of Florida football broadcasts.
The station progressed and launched a new brand Sports Radio 560 WQAM in 1993. They began to transmit Florida Marlins radio game broadcasts in their inaugural season and Florida State Seminoles football. WQAM brought in Hank Goldberg for their afternoon show along with launching The First Team morning program with Jimmy Cefalo and Dave Lamont. Jon "Boog" Sciambi and Bob Wischusen were hired as producers and later became on-air talent.
