Panthers Escape Kings

The Florida Panthers reached the midway point of the regular season and slipped by the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 in overtime at Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday night. The Panthers returned from a four-game road swing and began a five-game homestand.
Florida extended their winning streak to nine games.  It was the first overtime game for the Panthers since November 28.
Los Angeles(20-10-8) broke out to a 1-0 advantage at 6:17 of the opening period. Trevor Moore powered in a wrist shot for his 18th goal in 2023-24.
In the second period, Florida(27-12-2) evened it up 1-1 with 9:02 left. Sam Bennett carried it through the neutral zone and angled a pass to his left. Eetu Luostarinen centered the puck from the left wing and Bennett tapped it in from the blue paint by Cam Talbot for his eighth goal of the season. Oliver Ekman-Larsson had the secondary assist on the play.
The Kings reclaimed the lead 2-1 on the power play with 20.1 seconds remaining in the second. Anze Kopitar won the faceoff in the left circle. Drew Doughty sent a pass from the left point to Adrian Kempe on the right wing. He returned the puck and Doughty blasted a one-time slap shot from the top of the zone. It was Doughty's first goal in 15 contests.
The Panthers brought out an extra attacker and tied it 2-2 with 2:18 to go in the third period. Sam Reinhart connected a cross-ice pass from the left circle. Carter Verhaeghe snapped a shot from the top right circle and it was deflected in by Matthew Tkachuk from the top of the crease for his 12th goal this season. Tkachuk and Verhaeghe extended their point streaks to seven games each.
The Cats picked up a power-play opportunity in overtime and capitalized for the 3-2 victory with 0.7 seconds left. Aleksander Barkov zipped a pass from above the top right circle to the right goal line. Reinhart shoveled in a backhand shot from the right of the crease for his 30th goal of the campaign. Reinhart reached the 30-goal mark for the third straight season.
It took 41 games for Reinhart to get to 30 goals in a season, which is the second fastest in franchise history. Pavel Bure accomplished that feat in 34 games back in the 1999-2000 season.
