The defending Stanley Cup Champions the Colorado Avalanche lost to the Florida Panthers 5-4 at Ball Arena on Tuesday night. The Panthers will finish their four-game road trip to all four mainland United States time zones in Las Vegas on Thursday night against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Florida(19-19-4) rolled out to a 3-0 lead during the first period. Aleksander Barkov collected his 10th goal this season at the 9:07 mark. Brandon Montour added an even-strength goal with 8:08 to go in the first and Sam Bennett scored his ninth goal of the campaign on the power play with 6:13 left in the period.
Colorado(20-16-3) closed the gap to 3-1 with 54 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Andrew Cogliano placed his sixth goal of the season.
In the second period, the Panthers increased their lead to 4-1 with 52 seconds left. Matthew Tkachuk got his 21st goal this season on assists from Barkov and Montour.
The Avalanche would score twice in a 20-second span during the third period. Mikko Rantanen found the net at the 6:29 mark and Nathan MacKinnon followed at 6:49. The Avs tied it up 4-4 on a goal by J.T. Compher with 7:53 left in the third.
It became 5-4 for the Panthers with 3:30 left in the period. Tkachuk scored with the man advantage and picked up his 22nd goal in 2022-23.
