The Florida Panthers upended the Boston Bruins 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at FLA Live Arena. It was the Panthers last game prior to the NHL All-Star Game break.
The Bruins came into the game with the most points in the National Hockey League standings. The Panthers became the first time to defeat the Bruins twice this season. It was the fourth and final matchup between both clubs during the 2022-23 regular season.
Boston(38-6-5) got on the scoreboard first with 3:10 remaining in the opening frame. Brandon Montour attempted clearing pass from his own right corner was intercepted by Craig Smith. He snapped a shot from the high slot by Alex Lyon for his third goal of the season.
Montour made up for his earlier mistake as he deflected in an Aleksander Barkov shot from the top right circle for his 10th goal of the year at the 8:55 mark of the second period to tie it up 1-1. Montour increased his point streak to nine games which is the longest by a Panthers defenseman in franchise history. Barkov extended his point streak to a career-high 11 games while Matthew Tkachuk chalked up his 40th assist in 2022-23.
The B's answered back with 2:05 to go in the second and regained the lead 2-1. Charlie Coyle collected his 11th tally this season with an unassisted goal as his centering pass from the right corner was accidentally batted into the cage by Sam Bennett in the crease area.
In the third period, Florida(24-22-6) evened it 2-2 at 8:29. Bennett placed in his 12th goal of the season on a wrist shot from the top right circle past Jeremy Swayman. Radko Gudas got the assist on a pass out of his zone.
Both teams scored in the final minute of regulation to send it into overtime. The Bruins pulled ahead 3-2 with 48.6 seconds remaining in the period as David Pastrnak found the net for the 38th time of the season on a snap shot from the high slot. The Panthers matched it with 1.4 seconds left in the third as Barkov scored his 14th goal on a forehand shot from the inner left circle.
Florida got their only lead of the contest just 17 seconds into overtime. Anton Lundell made a short pass from the top of the zone to Barkov. He angled a pass from the right point and Sam Reinhart blasted a one-time slap shot from the top left circle for his 17th goal of the campaign. It was Reinhart's first career overtime goal and Barkov's 600th NHL point.
