Hurricanes Burn Wake Forest

     The University of Miami Hurricanes went to North Carolina and beat the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons 33-20 on Friday night. The Canes stand along in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.

     Miami(3-0,2-0) ripped out to a 7-0 lead on their first possession at 7:20 of the opening quarter. Quarterback Darian Mensah tossed a nine-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Joshua Moore in the middle of the end zone.

     Wake Forest(2-1, 0-1) tied it up 7-7 with 1:22 to go in the first. Wide receiver Kamrean Johnson caught a 10-yard touchdown pass in the back right corner of the end zone from quarterback Gio Lopez.

      In the second quarter, the Canes reclaimed the lead 14-7 at the 13:07 mark. Mensah connected a 21-yard pass to wide receiver Elija Lofton on the left side.

      The Hurricanes increased their lead to 21-7 with 8:17 remaining in the second. Running back Mark Fletcher Jr. busted up the middle from one yard away.

      It became 24-7 for Miami with no time left in the first half. Jake Weinberg kicked a 28-yard field goal. Mensah was a perfect 20-for-20 passing in the first two quarters of play

      In the second half, the Canes made it 31-7 at 9:56 of the third quarter. Mensah found wide receiver Malachi Toney in the back of the end zone on a two-yard touchdown toss.

      The Demon Deacons answered back with 4:06 left in the third and cut it to 31-13. Lopez fired a 23-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jack Foley.

     In the fourth quarter, Wake Forest closed it to 31-20 at the 14:56 mark. Wide receiver Carlos Hernandez made a 17-yard touchdown reception on the right side of the end zone from Lopez. 

Padres Eliminate Marlins

     The San Diego Padres canned the Miami Marlins 8-2 at Petco Park on Friday night. The Padres eliminated the Marlins from postseason contention in 2026 with the victory. The Fish continued their final road trip of the year. 

     Miami(76-78) broke out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Agustin Ramirez smacked a solo home run to left filed on a 1-1 pitch for his fifth homer  this year..

     San Diego(85-69) piled on six runs in the bottom of the fifth and they had a five-run margin. Fernando Tatis Jr. singled into right field to score Xander Bogaerts. Dustin Harris came up next and drove in Jake Cronenworth with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Ty France capped the frame with a three-run homer to left field on the first pitch with Tatos and Harris aboard. It was the 21st home run for France in 2026.

     The Marlins closed it to 6-2 during the top of the eighth. Javier Sanoja knocked in Otto Lopez on a base hit through the left side.

     The Padres responded with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth for an 8-2 advantage. Jackson Merrill started the rally with a solo home run to right field on a 1-2 pitch for his 26th homer of the season.

Bryce Oliver Heads To Texans

     One-time Broward County high school football wide receiver Bryce Oliver has signed with the Houston Texans. He was assigned to their practice squad. 

     Oliver was with the Dillard Panthers during high school football along with splitting his time in college football with Kentucky and Youngtown State. He played 13 contests with the Tennessee Titans for two seasons in 2024 and 2025. 

Eleanor Sheahan WPTV-TV Sportscaster

     Eleanor Sheahan joined the sports department at WPTV-TV Channel 5 and WFLX-TV Channel 29 in West Palm Beach last month. She has be used mainly as a sports reporter. 

     Sheahan previously worked as a sportscaster at KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs for three years before her arrival in South Florida. She broke into professional broadcasting as a news reporter with KOMU-TV in Columbia, Missouri. 

     Both WPTV-TV and WFLX-TV have used John Barron and Kendall Hyde as sports reporters since last year. News anchor Todd Wilson has been the Friday night high school football sports anchor since August 2022. 

Blanche Ely Tops Deerfield Beach In McDougle Bowl

     The Blanche Ely Tigers survived the Deerfield Beach Bucks 6-0 in overtime at Butler Stadium in the annual McDougle Bowl on Thursday night. Both teams played in the same district during 2024 and 2025. 

     The Tigers have been victorious in the past five meetings. The Bucks had won 10 consecutive matchups prior to that. 

     Blanche Ely(3-2) and Deerfield Beach(4-1) were held scoreless during the first fourth quarter of the game. The Tigers chalked up a touchdown in overtime to get the win. 

Miami & West Palm Beach Radio Markets Drop

     Miami and West Palm Beach dropped in radio market size among the most populated areas in the United States. Nielsen announced their new rankings of cities for their upcoming Fall 2026 ratings. 

     Seattle moved up to 11th place while Miami fell to 12th place in population. West Palm Beach went down two spots to 49th place. 

Locals Off Pro Football Selection Committee

     The Pro Football Hall of Fame has shifted the amount of media members on the selection committee from 50 down to 28. Two National Football League writers with local ties lost their positions. 

     Armando Salguero, former Miami Herald Miami Dolphins beat writer, was named one of the members who will not return. He has been on committee for the past 12 years. 

     One-time Miami Herald Miami Dolphins beat reporter Jason Cole was also taken off the committee. He had also done it for 12 years.
