It was the 13th time that both teams faced other in the last three seasons. The Herons have played four of their past five contests at home.
In the first half, Nashville SC(16-3-6) rocketed out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute. Sam Surridge booted a right-footed shot from 12 yards out.
Inter Miami CF(12-4-9) answered back in the 19th minute and tied it up 1-1. Lionel Messi took a corner kick from the right side and Reed Baker-Whiting headed the ball into his own cage for an own goal.
The Herons moved ahead 2-1 in the 62nd minute of play. Rodrigo De Paul fed a square pass with the outside portion of his right foot to his right and then Messi one-time a left-footed shot into the left side of the cage from 21 yards away. Messi is now ahead for the Golden Boot Award in Major League Soccer with his 19th goal of the season.
It became 2-2 during stoppage time at the end of the second half. Surridge collected his second goal of the contest for Nashville SC when he tapped in a rebound shot with his left foot from two yards.
