The University of Miami Hurricanes announced that they have signed a five-year extension with Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM to remain the radio home for their games. The contract would have the Canes remain with WQAM through the end of the 2016-17 school year.
The Hurricanes have aired on that station since the 1999-2000 season. It would include all football games along with most of the men's basketball season and a part of the baseball season. Since the Hurricanes have been on WQAM, they won the BCS national championship in 2001 and lost the national title game in 2002.
It is expected that Joe Zagacki will continue as the play-by-play announcer for University of Miami radio broadcasts. He was a game analyst from 1999 to 2002 working with Marc Vandermeer. Zagacki slid into the play-by-play spot when Vandermeer left to become the radio play-by-play announcer of the Houston Texans.
