The Miami Marlins fell to the Chicago Cubs with a 6-1 victory at Marlins Park on Wednesday. The Fish, who have lost eight of their last ten home games, continue their ten-game homestand tomorrow night against the New York Mets. The Cubs won their second straight road series for the first time this season.
Former Marlins Chris Coghlin started the first inning for Chicago(30-40) with a one-out double to deep right field against Nathan Eovaldi. He advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Rizzo to center. Starlin Castro knocked him on a line drive down the left-field line to make it 1-0.
Miami(36-35) pulled even in the bottom of the first as Giancarlo Stanton smacked his 20th home run of the season with two out to right-center field on a 2-1 pitch off Jake Arrieta.
The Cubbies regained the lead with four runs during the sixth inning. Rizzo singled to right with one out then scored on a double by Castro into right-center field. Castro moved to third on a base hit by Ryan Sweeny to left field. Nate Schierholtz followed with a three-run homer to the upper deck in right field on a 2-1 count. It was his third home run this year.
Jacob Turner came in to relieve in the eighth inning and Cubs extended their lead to 6-1. Castro led off with and infield hit and Sweeney then singled to left. Three batters later, Castro crossed the plate on an infield single by Darwin Barney.
Arrieta struck out 11 and allowed one run on five hits in seven innings to improve his record to 3-1. Eovaldi dropped to 4-3 as he pitched just over six innings and gave up five runs on nine hits.
