The Florida Panthers selected defenseman Aaron Ekblad as the first overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Friday night. He became the second player in Panthers franchise history to be picked first overall by the club. Defenseman Ed Jovanovski was named the top pick by the Cats at the 1994 NHL Draft.
Ekblad played for the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League for 2013-14 season and had 23 goals along with 30 assists in 58 games with the junior team. He was drafted first overall by Barrie in the OHL Entry Draft back in 2011 and played there for three seasons where he compiled 40 goals and 76 assists in 175 games.
