The Florida Panthers introduced Gerard Gallant as their new head coach of the team on Monday. He becomes the 13th head coach in franchise history. He replaces Peter Horachek who worked as an interim coach for the club from November 2013 until April 2014.
Gallant had previous NHL head coaching experience from 2003 to 2007 with the Columbus Blue Jackets where he took over for former Panthers head coach Doug MacLean. He recently worked as an assistant coach for the Montreal Canadiens over the past two seasons. Prior to that, Gallant was the head coach for the St. John Sea Dogs from 2009 until 2012. He coached current Panthers center Jonathan Huberdeau there and they won the 2011 Memorial Cup along with two QMJHL titles.
As a player in the National Hockey League, Gallant played his first nine seasons with the Detroit Red Wings from 1984 to !993 and his last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 1993 until 1995. He had 211 goals and 269 assists in 615 NHL games along with 1,674 penalty minutes.
