The Miami Marlins opened up a four-game series in Philadelphia and topped the Phillies 7-4 at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday night. Both teams reached the midway point of the 2024 regular season. The Phillies currently lead the National League East Division. The Marlins still remain in last place.
In the first inning, Philadelphia(53-28) had a 1-0 lead. Bryce Harper doubled off the center-field wall for Park Vista High School grad Trea Turner to score.
The Phillies made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Rafael Marchan belted the first pitch to left field for a solo homer. It was his second home run of the campaign.
It became 3-0 for the Phils in the fifth inning. Edmundo Sosa knocked in Turner with a base hit through the left side.
Miami(29-52) piled on four runs in the top of the seventh and took a 4-3 lead. Bryan De La Cruz cleared the bases with a double into left-center field that scored Otto Lopez, Ali Sanchez and Jazz Chisholm Jr. It was followed by a Josh Bell double to left field and De La Cruz crossed the plate.
Philadelphia evened it up 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. Alex Bohm hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Turner reached home for the third time in the contest.
The Marlins extended their lead to 6-4 in the eighth inning. Jake Burger hammered a solo home run to left field on a 0-0 count for his seventh homer of the season. Nick Gordon made it 6-4 as Lopez grounded into a fielder's choice.
