Padres Knock Off Marlins

     The Miami Marlins dropped a contest to the San Diego Padres 8-3 on Thursday night at Petco Park. The Marlins have lost nine of their last 12 games and head for Arizona to continue their 10-game road trip.
     For the second straight game, San Diego(25-33) raced out to the lead in the bottom of the first. Chrisitan Villaneuva smashed a two-run homer to left field on the first pitch as he drove in Jose Pirela for his 15th home run of the season.
     Both clubs would score two runs each in the second inning. The unlikely person for Miami(20-36) to get offense from was starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen as he singled into center which brought home Brian Anderson and J.T. Riddle.
     The Padres regained the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the frame. American Heritage grad Eric Hosmer got a single to center field with A.J. Ellis and Jordan Lyles crossing the plate.
     In the fifth inning, the Friars put up three additional runs to extend their lead to 7-2. Hunter Renfroe doubled into left field to score Hosmer. Villaneuva would then score on a fielding error with Ellis at-bat. Renfroe touched home on a ground out by Manuel Margot to the pitcher.
     The Marlins got a tally during the top of the eighth. Derek Dietrich lined a solo home run to right field on a 1-0 count for his sixth homer of the year.
     San Diego capped the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hosmer knocked in Pirela with a base hit into shallow center field.

Padres Walk Off Marlins

     The Miami Marlins stumbled and were defeated by the San Diego Padres 3-2 at Petco Park on Wednesday night. The Marlins have lost eight of their last 11 games.
     Miami(20-35) got ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning. Starlin Castro smacked a two-run homer to center field on a 3-2 pitch. J.T. Realmuto was able to score in front of him on the play to make it 2-0.
     San Diego(24-33) answered back in the bottom of the fourth. Franmil Reyes homered to right field on a 3-2 count and cut it to 2-1. It was the third straight game in which he compiled a home run against the Fish in the series.
     The Padres rallied in the ninth and loaded the bases. Hunter Renfroe came up as a pinch-hitter with one out and softly chopped an infield hit to third. A Miguel Rojas throw got by Yadiel Rivera at first and Freddy Galvis scored the winning run.

The Beast Adds WQAM Duties

     Brian London, a.k.a. The Beast, was named the assistant program director at Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM and Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM on May 15. WQAM is a sister station of The Ticket in Miami under the Entercom Communications banner when they officially merged in November 2017.
     London, a University of Miami grad, was the programming assistant under program director Len Weiner at The Ticket. He will continue as the midday co-host, midday sports anchor and weekend host at that station.
     It is a return for London to WQAM where he began his professional broadcasting career as an intern and an overnight board operator in 1997. He eventually was promoted to producer and later became a weekday sports anchor and weekend host at that station until 2009. He was also part of the University of Miami Hurricanes Radio Network in the late 2000s as the football sideline reporter, basketball studio host and baseball play-by-play announcer.
     After his long run at WQAM, The Beast became the afternoon talk host at SoFloRadio.com in September 2009 and evening host at All Digital Radio in 2010. He continued covering the University of Miami Hurricanes athletic program as a weekly radio host at All Canes.com in August 2010 along with being a reporter at CBS Sports.com in 2011.
     The Beast joined 104.3 The Ticket WAXY-FM as a fill-in host in late 2012 and became the late night host and weekend host there and at 790 The Ticket in January 2013.

Padres Drive By Marlins

     The San Diego Padres pulled away from the Miami Marlins 9-5 on Tuesday night at Petco Park. The Fish have fallen in seven of their last 10 games.
     The first inning was owned by San Diego(23-33) as they mustered three runs. American Heritage grad Eric Hosmer drove in Travis Jankowski and Cory Spangenberg with a base hit into center field. Raffy Lopez came up next and knocked in Hosmer on a single to right.
     The Marlins got one run in the top of the fourth. J.T. Riddle grounded into a double play for Justin Bour to score.
     Miami(20-34) battled back with three runs during the sixth inning and took the lead 4-3. Derek Dietrich scored on a triple by J.T. Realmuto to left field. Realmuto then reached home on a base hit by Brian Anderson to left. J.B. Schuck later doubled toward deep right field and Anderson scored on the play.
     The Padres bounced back and overtook the Fish in the bottom of the frame. Franmil Reyes homered to left-center field on a 3-1 pitch and Jose Pirela scored in front of him.
     The Friars added a four insurance runs in the eighth inning when Lopez walked with the bases loaded and that brought in Spangenberg. Pinch-hitter Christian Villanueva came up and hit the first pitch up the middle for a two-run single as Hosmer and Pirela scored. Freddy Galvis followed with a shot to deep center field which went off the glove of Lewis Brinson for an error and Lopez raced in from second.
     The ninth inning saw Miami got one run. Riddle hit a line drive past Manuel Margot in center field and he rounded the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Jim Morris Done As Hurricanes Season Ends

     The University of Miami Hurricanes baseball team was not selected to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. They had appeared in a record 44 consecutive years in the postseason up until 2016.
     Jim Morris finished his long tenure as the Hurricanes manager with the end of the regular season. He replaced Ron Fraser at the post in 1993 and remained there for 25 years. Morris led the Canes to two national titles and 13 College World Series appearances. He was the manager at Georgie Tech prior to his arrival in South Florida.

Travis Homer On Magazine Cover

     Former Oxbridge Academy running back Travis Homer appears on the front cover of Lindy's Sports college football Florida edition magazine. Homer has played the last two years with the University of Miami Hurricanes. He helped the school capture their first Coastal Division title in 2017.
     Homer was with the Oxbridge Academy Thunderwolves when they initiated their high school football program in 2013. He helped them as an independent in the Southeastern Conference in their first two years. They become an FHSAA football member school in 2015 and won the District 7-3A title in their first season of district play.

Marlins Take Down Padres

     The Miami Marlins began a 10-game road trip as they beat the San Diego Padres 7-2 at Petco Park on Monday. The Marlins are in the middle of a stretch in which they play 16 of 19 games on the road.
     Miami(20-33) blasted out with four runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Starlin Castro singled into center field and Brian Anderson scored. Two batters later, Cameron Maybin knocked in Castro with a base hit to center. Yadiel Rivera followed with a two-run single into center which brought in Justin Bour and Maybin.
     In the second inning, San Diego(22-33) got their first run of the contest. Franmil Reyes stroked a solo home run to left field on the first pitch. Maybin made it a four-run lead again on a base hit to right field as Castro scored.
     The Fish compiled two more runs in the top of the ninth. Derek Dietrich hit a double to deep left and Rivera crossed the plate. Miguel Rojas then drove in Dietrich with a single to left field.
     The Padres generated one run in the bottom of the ninth inning. An infield hit by Hunter Renfroe scored Christian Villanueva.

Greg Likens Back On WQAM

     Greg Likens returned to Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM on Monday as a fill-in afternoon co-host with South Florida Sun-Sentinel Miami Heat beat writer Ira Winderman. Likens works as a weekend host and fill-in host on sister-station Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM since February 2017.
     It had been a while since Likens, a Syracuse University grad, was on the WQAM airwaves. He was a morning producer, morning sports anchor, morning sidekick and weekend host at that station from 2007 to April 2014. He replaced Jesse Agler as the studio host of The Finsiders Show on Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM and Fox Sports Florida. Likens held that spot until the program ended in March 2016. He was the studio host on the Miami Dolphins Radio Network during the 2014 and 2015 NFL seasons.

Nationals Sweep Through Marlins

     The Washington Nationals swept a weekend series with a 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday at Marlins Park. The Marlins have lost six of their last eight games and now head out on a 10-game road trip.
     In the fourth inning, Washington(29-22) struck. Anthony Rendon hit a solo home run to left-center field on a 3-1 pitch against Marlins starting pitcher Elieser Hernandez.
     The Nationals put up another tally in the top of the fifth. Stephen Strasburg singled into right field which brought in Wilmer Difo.
     Jarlin Garcia entered the game for Miami(19-33) in the sixth inning and was welcomed immediately. Bryce Harper hit a towering lead-off solo homer down the right-field line on a 2-2 pitch. It was the 16th home run of the season for Harper and his ninth ever at Marlins Park.
     The Nats extended their margin to 5-0 during the top of the seventh inning. Trea Turner drove in Severino with a double to center field. Harper came out next and hit a sacrifice fly into center for Mark Reynolds to score.
     The Marlins later put two runs across the plate. Yadiel Rivera scored on a double by J.T. Realmuto to deep left field in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Bour smashed a solo home run to center field on a 2-0 pitch during the eighth inning.

Nationals Stride By Marlins

     The Washington Nationals got a ninth-inning rally to down the Miami Marlins 4-1 at Marlins Park on Saturday. The Fish are in a stretch where they play three of 19 games at home. They finish their short three-game home stand on Sunday.
     It was the fourth inning when Miami(19-32) got the lead. Brian Anderson singled into right field for J.T. Realmuto to score.
     The Nats tied the contest during the top of the eighth. Wilmer Difo nailed a solo home run to left field on a 2-2 count.
     Washington(28-22) jolted the Marlins in the ninth inning and took their first lead. Mark Reynolds cracked a solo homer to left on a 3-1 pitch. Matt Adams knocked in Juan Soto with a base hit into right field. Park Vista grad Trea Turner then drove in Matt Adams on a single to center field.

Boca Raton Routs South Broward

     The Boca Raton Bobcats crushed the South Broward Bulldogs on Friday night. It was the final high school spring football game in Palm Beach County and South Florida this year.
     Boca Raton scored with 3:10 left in the first quarter when running back scored from two yards away to make it 7-0. Bobcats quarterback Michael Pratt connected with wide receiver Deltavian Jenkins on a touchdown pass with 7:33 remaining in the second quarter.
     The second half began and Boca Raton continued to dominate. Pratt threw a 50-yard pass to wide receiver Rashawn Faustine for the score. Gonzalez later added another rushing touchdown in the third for a 28-point margin.

Locals On Magazine Covers

     College football preview magazines were rolled out this week nationally. Several former South Florida high school football players had the honor to appear on the front cover of the annual college football preview magazines.
     University of Florida Gators running back Jordan Scarlett showed up on the front cover with Athlon Sports magazines on both their SEC and national editions. Scarlett was with St. Thomas Aquinas in his senior year and helped the Raiders win the 2014 FHSAA Class 7A state championship. He played high school football with University School prior to that.
     University of Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Ahmmon Richards ended up on the ACC magazine cover of Athlon Sports. Prior to his arrival with the Canes, he played football in Palm Beach County with the Wellington Wolverines through the 2015 season.
     Ohio State University Buckeyes defensive lineman Nick Bosa ended up on the Big Ten front cover of Athlon Sports. He captured three FHSAA state titles with the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Bosa also appeared on the front cover of Lindy's along with Street and Smith's national edition.

Steve Goldstein Hosting Stanley Cup Final

     Florida Panthers television play-by-play announcer Steve Goldstein will be the studio host for the Stanley Cup Final on Westwood One and NBC Sports Radio. It will be the third straight year that he has the same role.
     New York Rangers radio play-by-play voice Kenny Albert and Rangers television game analyst Joe Micheletti takes part of their third consecutive year on the radio broadcast. The Stanley Cup Final will began on Monday night with the Washington Capitals at the Vegas Golden Knights.
     Goldstein has been a part of the Westwood One broadcasts as a rinkside reporter in several rounds of the 2018 NHL Playoffs which included the Western Conference Finals. He has been associated with Florida Panthers broadcasts on either television or radio since the 1996-97 season.

Cardinal Gibbons Outlast Dwyer

     Spring football returned to The Furnace on Thursday night as the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs took the Dwyer Panthers 21-7 at Dr. Bud Tight Field. Both schools have consistently participated in the FHSAA Playoffs over the past decade.
     After a scoreless first quarter, Cardinal Gibbons broke the tie in the second at the 8:19 mark. Quarterback Nik Scalzo rolled to his left and ran the ball into the end zone from eight yards away for a 7-0 lead.
     Both teams would combine for 21 points during the fourth quarter. Chiefs backup quarterback Brody Palhegyi threw a high pass to the right edge of the end zone where wide receiver Troy Stellato jumped up and brought down the ball for a 12-yard touchdown at 9:23.
     Dwyer responded with a score on their next possession with 7:20 remaining. Panthers backup quarterback James Dailey connected a short pass to running back Reggie Gadsen and he raced down the middle of the field for a 40-yard touchdown play to cut the gap 14-7.
     The Chiefs regained a 14-point margin with 4:13 left to put the contest away. Running back Coleman Bennett caught a screen pass from Palhegyi on the left hash marks. He dashed to the right side of the field and scored from 18 yards out.

Marlins Slip By Mets

     The Miami Marlins came back to beat the New York Mets 2-1 on Wednesday night at Citi Field. The Fish took the three-game series by winning the last two games.
     New York(24-21) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Brandon Nimmo connected with a 2-2 pitch to right field for a solo home run.
     Miami(18-30) mounted a comeback rally in the ninth inning and overtook the Mets. J.T. Realmuto knocked in Yadiel Rivera with a base hit to center. Two batters later, Realmuto scored on a single by Starlin Castro into left field.

Santaluces Tops John I. Leonard

     The Santaluces Chiefs faced their district rival John I. Leonard and got a 16-6 victory on Wednesday night. It was the fourth and final two-quarter spring football game of the evening.
     Santaluces got out to a 8-0 lead at 3:02 of the first quarter. Quarterback Tyler Kintz fired a seven-yard pass to wide receiver Justin Raymonvil on the left hash marks for the score. Kintz rushed into the end zone on a two-point conversion.
     The Chiefs made it a 16-point margin on the first play of the second quarter at the 11:52 mark. Running back Gerry Charles powered to the left side on a sweep for five yards out and they added a two-point conversion pass.
     John I. Leonard finally got into the end zone in the last couple of minutes. Lancers quarterback Jadiel Cruz carried the ball up the middle from one yard away.

Suncoast And John I. Leonard Tie

     The Suncoast Chargers and the John I. Leonard Lancers ended up 0-0 in a two-quarter game on Wednesday night between both schools. It was a contest held at Santaluces High School.
     It was a general surprise that both teams held the ball for just two possessions. The Chargers and Lancers mainly used rushing attacks and neither came close to a scoring opportunity.

Monarch Cuts Down Suncoast

     The Monarch Knights swept their way to a second straight two-quarter victory on Wednesday night as they beat the Suncoast Chargers 14-8. The Knights defeated the spring football jamboree host Santaluces in the prior game.
     It was late in the first quarter when somebody got on the scoreboard. Monarch linebacker Bobby McLaughlin picked off a pass and returned it 22 yards with 1:53 to go.
     The Knights extended the gap to 14-0 at the 7:18 mark of the second quarter. Quarterback Zachary D'Amico found wide receiver Brady Brauner in the middle of the field for a 13-yard touchdown.
     Suncoast stayed in the contest with 3:19 left. Wing back Aaron Adams dashed around the left end and down the sideline for a 75-yard touchdown score. They added another two points on the conversion run.

Monarch Leaps By Santaluces

     The Monarch Knights overcame the Santaluces Chiefs 11-8 in a two-quarter game on Wednesday night. It was the first spring football game of four contests held at Santaluces High School.
     After recovering a fumble at the Knights 29-yard line, Santaluces scored on a two-yard run by running back Val Carnegie to the left side of the line at 7:21 of the first quarter. Quarterback Tyler Kintz went around the right end for a two-point conversion run and an 8-0 lead.
     Monarch would control play late in the second quarter. Wide receiver Edwin Lebron made a seven-yard touchdown catch in the front of the end zone from quarterback Zachary D'Amico with 2:21 remaining. They get a two-point conversion on a toss by D'Amico to wide receiver Brady Brauner on the right side to tie the contest.
     The Knights jumped to a 11-8 lead with 1:03 left. Joao Mattos kicked a 47-yard field goal with plenty of distance for the go-ahead score.

Marlins Dash By Mets

     The Miami Marlins bounced back with a 5-1 victory over the New York Mets at Citi Field on Tuesday night. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Marlins.
     Miami(18-30) compiled three runs in the top of the second. A Miguel Rojas base hit to right field brought home Brian Anderson. Four batters later, J.T. Realmuto got a two-run single to center which scored Derek Dietrich and Rojas.
     New York(24-20) responded with one tally in the bottom of the frame. Tomas Nido drove in the newest Mets player Jose Bautista with a sacrifice fly to right field.
     The Marlins put the contest out of reach in the eighth inning. Dietrich smacked a two-run homer to right field on the first pitch and Anderson scored on front of him on the play.

Miami Northwestern And Atlantic Settle For Draw

     The defending FHSAA Class 6A state champion Miami Northwestern Bulls went up to Delray Beach on Tuesday night and tied the Class 8A state finalist Atlantic Eagles 8-8 at War Eagle Stadium in a spring football game. Both schools faced each other at the same site in a spring football game last year with the Bulls victorious 19-7.
     A pregame ceremony was held for former Eagles defensive back Marc Allan Derac, who passed away several weeks ago from a dirt bike accident. Atlantic will retire the number 23 jersey in his honor to open up the 2018 high school football season in August.
     Northwestern jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter. Quarterback Isaiah Velez threw a 15-yard pass to wide receiver Rayquan Berry in the back of the end zone for a touchdown and added a two-point conversion pass for an eight-point margin.
     Atlantic was able to get the momentum late in the third quarter. After they had a drive stopped at the Bulls 16-yard line with four minutes to go, Northwestern got the ball and things went wrong. Eagles cornerback Lincoln Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards for a score with 1:50 left in the third. They converted a pass for a two-point conversion and tied the contest 8-8.
     The Eagles had one more scoring opportunity midway through the fourth quarter. Kicker Brian Litang had the distance and missed a 47-yard field goal wide left with 6:56 remaining.

Miramar Outscores Dillard

     The Miramar Patriots eased by the Dillard Panthers 14-7 in a spring football game on Monday night at Ansin Sports Complex. The contest was postponed last week and rescheduled.
     The game turned out to be similar as previous spring football games over the past couple of years. It was again dominated by defensive play and limited scoring chances between both teams.

Mets Get By Marlins

     The Miami Marlins continued their road swing with a 2-0 shutout loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field on Monday night. The Marlins have fallen in three straight games and four of their last five.
     In the third inning, New York(24-19) was able to go ahead 1-0. Asdrubal Cabrera doubled down the right-field line for Amed Rosario to cross the plate.
     The Mets added another run during the bottom of the seventh. Wilmer Flores singled through the right side of the infield which scored Devin Mesoraco with one out.
     Miami(17-30) tried to mount a comeback in the top of the eighth. Starlin Castro hit a triple into the right-center field gap with two out. Brian Anderson followed with a line drive to left field, however Brandon Nimmo made a diving catch to end the inning.

Coral Springs Smash Spanish River

     The Coral Springs Colts overwhelmed the Spanish River Sharks 47-7 on Monday in Boca Raton. The game had been postponed on two occasions last week.
     Coral Springs scored on their first possession two minutes into the contest. Quarterback De'Andre Johnson connected a 13-yard pass to wide receiver Chris Hill Jr. on the left hash marks. Two plays into the Sharks next drive, they intercepted a pass and returned it for a 27-yard score at the 9:10 mark for a 13-0 lead.
     The Colts capped the first quarter with another touchdown on their second offensive possession. Wide receiver Cam'ron Bell caught a deflected seven-yard pass on the right side of the end zone from Johnson with three minutes remaining.
     In the second quarter, running back Michael Jarrett raced down the right hash marks for a 67-yard touchdown run at 8:30. Coral Springs increased their margin to 33 points when backup quarterback Mason Hamze went around the right end on an option and scored from 50 yards away with 6:30 to go.
     Spanish River finally generated a good drive and broke the shutout with 39 seconds left in the first half. Quarterback Connor Tribby rolled out to his left, made a spinning move and tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Blake Goldberg on the left edge of the end zone.
     The second half would have Coral Springs put in another 14 points. It included a one-yard run by another backup quarterback Frank-David Kosilla through the right side of the line from the shotgun position.

Braves Over Marlins On Weekend

     The Miami Marlins fell to the Atlanta Braves in two weekend games held at SunTrust Park this weekend. Miami(17-29) were blown out 9-1 on Saturday and Atlanta(28-17) edged the Fish 10-9 on Sunday.

Deerfield Beach Stops Glades Central

     The Deerfield Beach Bucks got a 35-21 victory over the Glades Central Raiders at Dick Melear Stadium at Palm Beach Lakes High School in West Palm Beach on Saturday night. Both schools are known for their famous high school football programs. It was the last of five games played in a spring high school football extravaganza.
     Deerfield Beach started off well and made it a 7-0 lead during the first quarter. Quarterback Tyler Herring fired a 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dashaun Davis on the right side at 5:05.
     In the second quarter, both teams combined for 35 points. Bucks cornerback Anthony Propere returned the ball 22 yards on an interception for a score at the 10:41 mark and a 14-point margin.
     Glades Central gained momentum and scored twice in a 19-second span midway through the second. Wide receiver Jymetre Hester caught the ball on a crossing pattern from Davius Richard and sprinted down the middle of the field untouched for a 29-yard touchdown at 6:25. Two plays into the Bucks next possession, Raiders linebacker Lamarcus McKay intercepted a slant pass to the left side and returned it 16 yards to tie the game 14-14 with 6:25 left.
     The final couple of minutes would belong to the Bucks as they pulled out to another 14-point lead. Linebacker Wydmere Garcon made an interception and scored from 60 yards away with 4:08 to go. Quarterback Derohn King connected a 23-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bryce Gowdy in the back left corner of the end zone with 46.2 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
     The second half saw less scoring between both traditional powers in South Florida. Hester set up a scoring drive for the Raiders on a 57-yard catch to the Bucks 15-yard line. Four plays later, Richard threw a 15-yard pass to wide receiver Odieu Hilaire on the front right side of the end zone and cut the deficit to 28-21 with 7:33 to go in the fourth quarter.
     The Bucks wrapped the contest up in the final seconds. King scrambled out of the pocket and raced up the middle for a two-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds remaining.

Palm Beach Central Drops Centennial

     The Palm Beach Central Broncos defeated the Centennial Eagles 16-6 on Saturday at Palm Beach Lakes High School. The facility held three two-quarter games earlier in the day, however both teams played a four-quarter contest against each other.
     Palm Beach Central broke up to a 8-0 lead at 4:36 of the first quarter. Running back Charles Stewart cut to the left sideline and scored a 48-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Anarjahe Douriet reached the end zone on a two-point conversion run.
     The Broncos increased to a 16-point margin at the 8:09 mark of the third quarter. Running back De'quan Hamilton rushed around the right end on a shovel pass and down the right sideline as he scored from 51 yards away. Douriet connected a two-point conversion pass in the front of the end zone to tight end Jake Ray.
     Centennial broke the shutout with just 2:04 left in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Ashton Houser threw an eight-yard pass to running back Cedrick Wilcox on the right sideline.

Palm Beach Lakes Ties Rockledge

     The Palm Beach Lakes Rams and the Rockledge Raiders played to a scoreless 0-0 tie on Saturday in West Palm Beach. It was the third two-quarter game to be played in this high school spring football festival.
     Rockledge finished the day with a 1-0-1 record. Palm Beach Lakes ended up 0-1-1 and failed to score in both games they played.

South Dade Surprises Palm Beach Lakes

     The Palm Beach Lakes Rams hosted the South Dade Buccaneers at Dick Melear Stadium and lost 9-0 in a two-quarter spring football game. It was a general surprise because the Buccaneers had just participated in a two-quarter contest against Rockledge while Palm Beach Lakes was fresh and playing on their home field.
     The Buccaneers made it 7-0 with 4:32 left in the second quarter on a seven-yard pass by quarterback Demetrius Burns. South Dade got a safety at the 3:13 mark when a bad snap from center was recovered by a Rams running back in the end zone. South Dade completed the day with a 1-1 mark.

Rockledge Edges South Dade

     The Rockledge Raiders held off the South Dade Buccaneers 6-0 in a two-quarter spring football game held at Palm Beach Lakes High School on Saturday. It was the first of five football games held in a special spring football extravaganza in West Palm Beach.
     Rockledge scored the only points of the contest during the first quarter. They made it 6-0 on a shovel pass by the quarterback to a wide receiver who went around the left end.

Marlins Hold Braves Scoreless

     The Miami Marlins shut out the Atlanta Braves 2-0 on Friday night at SunTrust Park. It was the beginning of a stretch for the Marlins where they 16 of their next 19 games on the road. Atlanta(26-17) barely remains in first place in the National League East.
     Miami(17-27) scored both of their runs in the contest during the top of the sixth. J.T. Realmuto tripled into right-center field for Martin Prado to score. Starlin Castro followed with a double to right field which brought in Realmuto.

Kings Academy Dominates Everglades Prep

     The King Academy Lions easily defeated the Everglades Prep Panthers 42-12 at Kahlert Stadium on Friday night. Everglades Prep made the long trip from Homestead to West Palm Beach for the spring football game.
     Kings Academy was able to score on their first two possessions of the first contest. Quarterback Justin Wake connected a 37-yard touchdown pass up the middle to Drew Luchey at the 9:14 mark of the first quarter. Wake threw an 18-yard pass to wide receiver Cory Corteau on the right side of the end zone at 4:58 to make it 14-0.
     The Panthers started a drive deep in their territory late in the second quarter. A bad snap went over the quarterback and it was recovered in the end zone by Corteau for a touchdown with 2:20 remaining.
     The Lions would get the ball again on a three-and-out by the Panthers. They scored on a third-down play when Wake found wide receiver Jeremiah Scroggins all alone on the left sideline with no defenders near him as he walked into the end zone with a 61-yard touchdown reception with 52.3 seconds to go in the first half.
     TKA got the ball first in the third quarter and they struck quickly to make it a 35-point cushion. Wake released the ball deep down the left sideline, Croteau was able to get under it and sprinted in for a 61-yard strike at 10:35.
     The Everglades Prep offense finally showed some life on their next drive when wide receiver Kevon Holmes caught a 58-yard pass in the middle and took it to the Lions 12-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback David Jeter faked a handoff, ran a bootleg to the left side and scored from five yards away at the 5:52 mark.
     The Lions brought in their reserve players in for the fourth quarter, which had a running clock. D.J. Alexandre rushed through the right side of the line and reached the end zone from five yards out with 8:40 remaining in the contest.
     Everglades Prep would got into the end zone once more before time expired. Jeter delayed then ran up the middle for a touchdown with 3:38 left.

Park Vista Handles Olympic Heights

     The Park Vista Cobras hosted the Olympic Heights Lions and topped them 28-7 at GL Homes Stadium on Thursday night. It was the first spring football game to be played in Palm Beach County this year.
     After Olympic Heights punted the ball on their opening drive, Park Vista scored on their first possession. Running back Nick King went through the right side of the line and reached the end zone on a nine-yard touchdown run at 7:30 of the first quarter. They had a 53-yard interception by safety D'Marco Augustin returned for a touchdown at the 6:37 mark, however it was negated due to a penalty.
     The Cobras extended their lead during the second quarter. Running back Joshua Jean dashed through the middle from six yards out for a touchdown at 9:34. King added another score with a run from one yard away with 5:05 left in the second as he cut to the left side and made it 21-0.
     Park Vista was able to score early in the third quarter for a 28-point margin. Olympic Heights finally got on the scoreboard later in the quarter when linebacker Nick Palmenteri recovered a fumble and returned it 88 yards for a touchdown with 2:39 remaining.

West Palm Beach Ratings April 2018

     The West Palm Beach region could become a competitive sports market on the radio for the first time in four years. Several sports radio format stations made some announcements for changes.
     ESPN West Palm 106.3 WUUB-FM would see an end of an era in April. It was the final month that Evan Cohen broadcast a two-hour show and Josh Cohen was in the midday shift. The program with Evan Cohen will be cut down to one hour while Josh Cohen shifts from middays to mid-afternoons in May.
     640 The Hurricane WMEN-AM saw their numbers go from a 0.1 to a 0.2 in the month. The anticipation of the start of the New York Yankees regular season did help. They also got a bump from the one-hour Kevin's Other Show with Kevin Rolston which is broadcast twice a day.
     1230 The Zone WBZT-AM remained at a 0.0 for the eighth straight month. It was thought that the addition of Miami Marlins broadcasts at night would have an impact on the station.

Marlins Can Not Sweep Dodgers

     The Miami Marlins finished a seven-game home stand and lost to the defending National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers 7-0 at Marlins Park on Thursday. The Fish took four out of six games in the season series this year.
     The Matlins will now play 16 of their next 19 games on the road. The Dodgers saw the end of a six-game losing streak.
     Los Angeles(17-26) was able to load the bases in the third inning against Marlins starting pitcher Caleb Smith. Justin Turner lined a three-run double to left field with one out that scored Yasiel Puig, Chris Taylor and Austin Barnes. Matt Kemp followed with a ground-rule double to center field which brought in Turner to make it  4-0.
     Miami(16-27) reliever Junichi Tazawa was greeted immediately in the top of the fourth by the Dodgers. Puig came to the plate with one out and blasted a solo home run to left field on the first pitch. It was second homer of the series for him and third of the season. Turner later ripped a double down the left-field line that scored Taylor and Barnes with two outs.

Dodgers Fall To Marlins

     The Miami Marlins defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 on Tuesday night at Marlins Park. The Dodgers losing streak is now at six games. The Marlins complete their seven-game home stand on Thursday afternoon.
     Unlike in his major league starting debut last month, Miami(16-26) was able to get a run against Dodgers starting pitcher Walker Buehler. Brian Anderson got a base hit up the middle into center field for Martin Prado to score with two out in the first inning.
     The Marlins expanded their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Starlin Castro singled to center for Prado to cross the plate.
     In the fourth inning, Los Angeles(16-26) chalked up one run versus Marlins starting pitcher Elieser Hernandez and closed the gap to 2-1. Yasmani Grandal led off and crushed a 3-2 pitch over the center-field wall for his seventh home run of the season.
     The Fish put some distance between them and their opponent during the bottom of the fifth. Justin Bour sliced a two-run home run to left field on a 3-2 count with Castro scoring in front of him. It was his ninth round-tripper of the year. Miguel Rojas later hit a sacrifice fly into right-center field for Anderson to score and made it 5-1.
     The Dodgers get on the scoreboard four times in the sixth inning to tie it up 5-5. Grandal lined a single to right-center field for Joc Pederson to score from third. Chris Taylor came up next and cracked a single into right field for Grandal to score. Max Muncy capped the frame with a ground-rule double that went over the right-center field fence which brought in Cody Bellinger and Taylor.
     Miami responded and regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth against Pedro Baez. J.T. Realmuto lifted a solo home run to left on a 1-2 pitch.

Miami Ratings April 2018

     The Miami/Fort Lauderdale market remained the same as Sports Talk 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM was on top among all local sports format radio stations in the region for the fourth straight month. All three competitors did not see any relevant changes.
     The Ticket stayed at a 0.9 for the fourth consecutive month. It was general surprise that there was no bump in the ratings as the Miami Heat won the Southeast Division and played in the first round of the NBA playoffs after a one-year absence.
     After three months at a 0.8, Miami Sports Radio 560 WQAM-AM fell slightly to a 0.7 in April. The station had no game broadcasts with the end of the Florida Panthers regular season and the Miami Hurricanes baseball games now on their sister-station.
     Miami Sports 940 WINZ-AM remained at a 0.3 for the second straight month. It helped that the Marlins began the season at home in 12 of the first 15 games and were not down in the standings.

Marlins Victorious Over Dodgers

     The Miami Marlins once again surprised the defending National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 at Marlins Park on Tuesday night. The Fish have won three of the four contests against the Dodgers this season. The Dodgers extended their losing streak to five games.
     The Marlins got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Martin Prado was able to score on a Logan Forsythe throwing error. Miami(15-26) made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second when Brian Anderson scored on a Miguel Rojas sacrifice fly to center field.
     Los Angeles(16-25) punched in a run in the top of the seventh inning. Yasiel Puig smashed a solo home run to left field on a 1-1 pitch to close the gap.
     The Fish answered back in the bottom of the frame. J.T. Realmuto knocked in Yadiel Rivera with a double into left field. Two batters later, Anderson got a base hit to right which brought in Realmuto.
     The Dodgers picked up another solo homer during the ninth. Cody Bellinger ripped a shot over the center-field wall on a 1-1 count.

Keli Ferguson Back On Television

     Keli Ferguson returned back to the sports anchor position at WPTV-TV Channel 5 and WFLX-TV Channel 29 in West Palm Beach on May 1. She had taken time off while on maternity leave. Jason Pugh had filled in for her on the staff for the last several months.
     Ferguson, who once went by the name Keli Fulton, first worked at WDSU-TV in New Orleans as a sportscaster. She landed at WPTV-TV as a newscaster and later added duties as a morning traffic anchor in January 2013. Ferguson left West Palm Beach in January 2014 for Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic in Washington D.C. as a sportscaster. She returned to WPTV-TV and WFLX-TV in December 2015 as a sports anchor.

Braves Avoid Loss To Marlins

     The Atlanta Braves barely held on and beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 at Marlins Park on Sunday. The Marlins, who have have lost six of their last seven games, finish their home stand as they face the defending National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the next three games.
     The Braves won five of their last six and 10 of their last 14 games overall. They have been victorious in nine of their last 10 road games.
     Atlanta(24-15) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Nick Markakis got a base hit into shallow left-center field for Freddie Freeman to score.
     Ender Inciarte would help increase the Bravos lead during the sixth. He belted a two-run homer to right field on a 1-1 pitch with Ronald Acuna Jr. in front of him.
     Miami(14-26) gave up one more run in the top of the ninth inning. Preston Tucker knocked in Kurt Suzuki with a infield single to the right side of the diamond.
     The Marlins made a charge in the bottom of the frame that made it close. Starlin Castro stated with a base hit to left and J.B. Schuck reached base on an infield hit to short. After Lewis Brinson struck out, pinch-hitter Justin Bour followed with a three-run homer to the upper deck in right field on a 1-0 count and the Fish cut the deficit to 4-3.

Marlins End Skid

     The Miami Marlins stopped a four-game losing streak as they defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-3 on Friday night at Marlins Park. The Braves remain on top of the National League East over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Braves Break From Marlins

     The Atlanta Braves pulled away from the Miami Marlins 9-2 at Marlins Park on Thursday night. The Fish, who began a seven-game homestand, have now lost four consecutive games. Atlanta stayed in first place in the National League East.
     The Braves had a 1-0 lead after two innings. Jose Bautista grounded out for Nick Markakis to score.
     Miami(13-24) tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth. Martin Prado singled into right field and Lewis Brinson scored.
     In the sixth inning, Atlanta(22-14) blew the game open with seven runs. Ozzie Albies smashed a grand-slam homer to right field on a 1-1 count. Ender Inciarte, Johan Carmago and Preston Tucker all scored on the play to make it 5-1. Two batters later, Freddie Freeman hit a two-run home run to right field on the first pitch. Inciarte would get another at-bat in the frame and knocked in Markakis with a ground-rule double to right.
     Both clubs scored in the ninth inning. Albies got a base hit into right field to bring in Camargo for the Bravos. Brinson added a solo home run for the Fish over the left-field fence on a 0-1 count.

Cubs Pound Marlins

     The Chicago Cubs completed a three-game sweep as they topped the Miami Marlins 13-4 at Wrigley Field on Wednesday. The Marlins went 2-4 on the six-game road swing.
     The Cubs got ahead in the first inning 1-0. Kris Bryant blasted a solo home run to left on a 1-2 pitch for his sixth homer of the season.
     Chicago(19-15) was able to bat around in the bottom of the third as they chalked up eight runs against Marlins staring pitcher Win-Yin Chen. Addison Russell scored on a Kris Bryant double into right-center field. Javier Baez reached base on an infield single to short with Albert Almora Jr. scoring. Anthony Rizzo followed with a three-run homer to right field that brought home Bryant and Almora for a 6-0 lead. Wilson tripled to right field and then scored on a sacrifice fly by David Bote to right. Ian Happ walked and scored on two-run home run by Russell to left-center field.
     In the fourth inning, Miami(13-23) managed to break the shutout. Brian Anderson triple off the top of the center-field wall and then scored on a ground out by Justin Bour to second.
     The Cubbies were able to match it in the bottom of the frame. Rizzo hooked a double into the right-field corner for Almora to score.
     Two more runs would be piled up by the Cubs in the sixth inning. Rizzo knocked in Almora with a double to deep right field. Wilson Contreras later doubled into center which scored Rizzo.
     The Marlins closed the gap to 12-3 in the seventh. Miguel Rojas lifted a two-run home run to left field on a 0-1 count. J.B. Schuck was on base and scored on the play.
     Bote grounded into a fielder's choice to short and Contreras would score for a Cubs 10-run margin in the eighth inning. Bryan Holaday hit a solo home run on a 2-2 count to left-center field in the top of the ninth for Miami.

Marlins Overcome By Cubs

     The Miami Marlins were unable to hold a three-run lead and lost to the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. The Fish, who have fallen in four of their last six games, finish their six-game road trip on Wednesday.
     In the first inning, Miami(13-22) was able to gain traction with a two-out rally. After Starlin Castro singled into left, Justin Bour blasted a two-run homer to left field on a 1-2 pitch. It was his seventh home run of the season. Brian Anderson came up next with a double off the center-field wall and then scored on a Derek Dietrich double into the left-field corner.
     Chicago(18-15) would get back in the game during the bottom of the second. Pinch-hitter David Bote doubled to left field for Victor Caratini and Ian Happ to cross the plate.
     The Cubs tied the contest up 3-3 during the bottom of the sixth inning. Caratini grounded into a fielder's choice to short for Kris Bryant to score.
     It would be the same exact situation when the Cubbies took their first lead of the game in the eighth inning. Bryant again got home when Caratini reached base on a fielder's choice to second for the game-winning run.

Cubs Smash Marlins

     The Chicago Cubs pounded the Miami Marlins 14-2 at Wrigley Field on Monday night. Both clubs split a four-game set in Miami to begin the 2018 regular season. The Fish have lost three of their last five games while the Cubs snapped a five-game losing streak.
     Chicago(17-15) blitzed Marlins starting pitcher Jarlin Garcia in the first couple of inning. Kris Bryant lined a two-run homer to left field in the first inning on a 1-2 pitch for his fifth home run of the season and extended his hit streak to seven games.
     The Cubbies made it a five-run margin in the bottom of the third. Javier Baez hit a three-run home run on a 1-1 count to center field with Albert Almora Jr. and Ben Zobrist scoring in front of him on the blast.
     The Cubs extended the contest to 7-0 in the fourth inning. Ian Happ connected with a two-run homer to center on a 1-1 pitch. He was able to knock in Addison Russell on the play.
     Miami(13-21) was able to put up one run during the top of the fifth. Derek Dietrich scored when Miguel Rojas grounded into a fielder's choice. Chicago answered back in the bottom of the frame with a two-run double by Russell to right which scored Bryant and Victor Caratini.
     The Marlins pulled to 9-2 in the seventh inning. Cameron Maybin knocked in Brian Anderson with a single to left field. Chicago answered with a three-run homer by Happ to left field on a 3-1 count for his second round-tripper of the contest.  
     In the eighth inning, the Cubs placed two more runs across the plate. Tommy La Stella drove in Zobrist with a base hit into center field. Byrant made it 14-2 when he scored on a single to left by Wilson Contreras.

Marlins Stuff Reds

     The Miami Marlins continued to roll with an 8-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on Sunday. The Marlins have now compiled eight wins in their last 11 games.
     The first inning began with Miami(13-20) putting up four runs against Reds starting pitcher Brandon Finnegan. It was three batters in when Starlin Castro knocked in J.T. Realmuto and Martin Prado with a base hit into left-center field. Cameron Maybin later got a RBI-double to left which brought in Castro. Brian Anderson would score when Lewis Brinson grounded out to second and made it 4-0.
     The Marlins increased the gap during the second inning. Castro popped a sacrifice fly to left field and Realmuto crossed the plate.
     Cincinnati(8-26) would get two runs in the bottom of the third off Marlins starting pitcher Dan Straily. Joey Votto blasted a two-run homer to left-center field on the first pitch and Jesse Winker was able to score in front of him. There was a one-hour, ten minute weather delay at the end of the fourth inning.
     Both clubs scored in the seventh inning. The Fish got their score as Maybin drove in Castro with a double to left. The Reds matched it when Billy Hamilton scored on a Votto double into right-center field.
     Miami expanded their margin to 8-3 in the top of the ninth. Miguel Rojas got a base hit to center which got Anderson home. Bour would score on a fielder's choice by J.B. Schuck to third.

Marlins Shut Out Reds

     The Miami Marlins blanked the Cincinnati Reds 6-0 on Saturday night at Great American Ball Park. The Fish have won seven of their last 10 games.
     In the first inning, Miami(12-20) ripped out to a 2-0 lead. Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer to center field on a 2-2 count. Martin Prado scored in front of him on the play. The Marlins made it 3-0 in the top of the sixth when Justin Bour cracked a solo home run to center on a 3-2 pitch.
     Cincinnati(8-25) surrendered three more runs in the eight inning. Castro knocked in J.B. Schuck with a double into left field. Brian Anderson followed with a two-run single to right which scored J.T. Realmuto and Castro.

Reds Attack Marlins

     The Miami Marlins started a six-game road trip as they fell to the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 at Great American Ball Park on Friday night. The Marlins began a stretch in which they play 22 of their next 32 games on the road. The Reds entered the contest with the worst record in Major League Baseball.
     Cincinnati(8-24) did all their scoring in the first inning as they put up four runs against Marlins starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen. Eugenio Suarez smashed a three-run homer to left field on a 1-2 pitch with one out to make it 3-0. Adam Duvall came up next and hit a solo home run to right field on a 1-1 count.
     Miami(11-20) placed their only run in the top of the fifth. Lewis Brinson lifted a solo homer to center field on a 2-2 pitch from Reds starting pitcher Sal Romano.

Ichiro Retires

     Former Miami Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki retired on Thursday after an 18-season career. He rejoined the Seattle Mariners prior to the 2018 season and played his final game on Wednesday night against the Oakland A's. He finished with 3,089 career hits and a .311 batting average.
     Ichiro played for three seasons with the Miami Marlins from 2015 to 2017. He is best remembered for getting his 3,000th base hit in the majors in 2016 when he faced the Colorado Rockies in Denver. Ichiro had 27 hits as a pinch-hitter last year with the Fish, one short of a Major League Baseball single-season record.
     He broke into the majors with the Mariners in 2001 and helped them to an American League record 116 wins in the regular season. The amount tied the major league record set by the Chicago Cubs back in 1906. Ichiro won the American League Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year Awards in 2001.
     He played with Seattle until he was traded to the New York Yankees during the 2012 season. He was with the Yankees for three seasons.

Bill Torrey Passes Away

     Original Florida Panthers President Bill Torrey passed away on Wednesday at the age of 83. He was part of the organization for over 25 years and had the number 93 retired for him in a banner ceremony back on October 23, 2010.
     Torrey joined the Panthers organization prior to their first season in 1993-94 as team president under owner H. Wayne Huizenga. He worked under four different majority owners during his reign which included Huizenga, Alan Cohen, Cliff Viner and Vincent Viola. He left the president position and became a team advisor in 2001.
     The Panthers, who set an NHL record for most wins and points by an expansion franchise in their inaugural season, made the playoffs in on five occasions and won the 1996 Eastern Conference championship in just their third season in existence. They lost to the Colorado Avalanche in four games during the Stanley Cup Finals. The Cats won a Southeast Division title in 2012 and an Atlantic Division title in 2016.
     He was the general manager of the New York Islanders from 1972 to 1992. The club won four consecutive Stanley Cup titles from 1980 to 1983. The Islanders won 19 straight NHL playoff series, which is still a league record. The team raised a banner with a bow tie and the words the architect on it in honor of him.
     Torrey first joined the National Hockey League at the start of the expansion era. He was an executive of the Oakland Seals from 1968 to 1970. He was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995.

Phillies Stop Marlins

     The Philadelphia Phillies avoided a three-game sweep with a 4-0 shutout win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night at Marlins Park. The loss snapped the Marlins four-game winning streak. Miami(11-19) play 22 of their next 32 games on the road.
     It took just four pitches for Philadelphia(17-13) to get out to the lead against Marlins starting pitcher Jose Urena. Cesar Hernandez smacked a solo home run to right-center field on a 2-1 count.
     The Phillies made it 2-0 in the top of the second inning. Aaron Nola reached base on an Urena fielding error and Pedro Florimon scored on the play.
    The Phils put up two runs in the eighth inning. Maikel Franco knocked in Aaron Altherr with a double into left field. Florimon later grounded out to first for Franco to score.
     Philadelphia compiled two additional runs in the top of the ninth to make it a six-run margin. Odubel Herrera drove in Hernandez on a base hit into left. Altherr came up next and popped a sacrifice fly to left field for Rhys Hoskins to score.

Marlins Need Extra Innings To Beat Phillies

     The Miami Marlins topped the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in 10 innings at Marlins Park on Tuesday night. The Fish have won four straight and six of their last seven games.
     Philadelphia(16-13) scored first during the top of the fifth. Rhys Hoskins knocked in Jorge Alfaro with a double to left field.
     In the sixth inning, Miami(11-18) was able to tie the contest 1-1. Pinch-hitter Justin Bour blasted a solo home run to right-center field on a 2-1 pitch.
     The Marlins won the game in the 10th inning. Cameron Maybin got a triple in left-center field with one out. After Miguel Rojas was intentionally walked, Yadiel Rivera hit a single into right-center field to bring in Maybin for the game-winning run.
