Spring football returned to The Furnace on Thursday night as the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs took the Dwyer Panthers 21-7 at Dr. Bud Tight Field. Both schools have consistently participated in the FHSAA Playoffs over the past decade.
After a scoreless first quarter, Cardinal Gibbons broke the tie in the second at the 8:19 mark. Quarterback Nik Scalzo rolled to his left and ran the ball into the end zone from eight yards away for a 7-0 lead.
Both teams would combine for 21 points during the fourth quarter. Chiefs backup quarterback Brody Palhegyi threw a high pass to the right edge of the end zone where wide receiver Troy Stellato jumped up and brought down the ball for a 12-yard touchdown at 9:23.
Dwyer responded with a score on their next possession with 7:20 remaining. Panthers backup quarterback James Dailey connected a short pass to running back Reggie Gadsen and he raced down the middle of the field for a 40-yard touchdown play to cut the gap 14-7.
The Chiefs regained a 14-point margin with 4:13 left to put the contest away. Running back Coleman Bennett caught a screen pass from Palhegyi on the left hash marks. He dashed to the right side of the field and scored from 18 yards out.
