Former Miami Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki retired on Thursday after an 18-season career. He rejoined the Seattle Mariners prior to the 2018 season and played his final game on Wednesday night against the Oakland A's. He finished with 3,089 career hits and a .311 batting average.
Ichiro played for three seasons with the Miami Marlins from 2015 to 2017. He is best remembered for getting his 3,000th base hit in the majors in 2016 when he faced the Colorado Rockies in Denver. Ichiro had 27 hits as a pinch-hitter last year with the Fish, one short of a Major League Baseball single-season record.
He broke into the majors with the Mariners in 2001 and helped them to an American League record 116 wins in the regular season. The amount tied the major league record set by the Chicago Cubs back in 1906. Ichiro won the American League Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year Awards in 2001.
He played with Seattle until he was traded to the New York Yankees during the 2012 season. He was with the Yankees for three seasons.
