The Miami Marlins dropped a contest to the San Diego Padres 8-3 on Thursday night at Petco Park. The Marlins have lost nine of their last 12 games and head for Arizona to continue their 10-game road trip.
For the second straight game, San Diego(25-33) raced out to the lead in the bottom of the first. Chrisitan Villaneuva smashed a two-run homer to left field on the first pitch as he drove in Jose Pirela for his 15th home run of the season.
Both clubs would score two runs each in the second inning. The unlikely person for Miami(20-36) to get offense from was starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen as he singled into center which brought home Brian Anderson and J.T. Riddle.
The Padres regained the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the frame. American Heritage grad Eric Hosmer got a single to center field with A.J. Ellis and Jordan Lyles crossing the plate.
In the fifth inning, the Friars put up three additional runs to extend their lead to 7-2. Hunter Renfroe doubled into left field to score Hosmer. Villaneuva would then score on a fielding error with Ellis at-bat. Renfroe touched home on a ground out by Manuel Margot to the pitcher.
The Marlins got a tally during the top of the eighth. Derek Dietrich lined a solo home run to right field on a 1-0 count for his sixth homer of the year.
San Diego capped the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hosmer knocked in Pirela with a base hit into shallow center field.
