The Deerfield Beach Bucks got a 35-21 victory over the Glades Central Raiders at Dick Melear Stadium at Palm Beach Lakes High School in West Palm Beach on Saturday night. Both schools are known for their famous high school football programs. It was the last of five games played in a spring high school football extravaganza.
Deerfield Beach started off well and made it a 7-0 lead during the first quarter. Quarterback Tyler Herring fired a 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dashaun Davis on the right side at 5:05.
In the second quarter, both teams combined for 35 points. Bucks cornerback Anthony Propere returned the ball 22 yards on an interception for a score at the 10:41 mark and a 14-point margin.
Glades Central gained momentum and scored twice in a 19-second span midway through the second. Wide receiver Jymetre Hester caught the ball on a crossing pattern from Davius Richard and sprinted down the middle of the field untouched for a 29-yard touchdown at 6:25. Two plays into the Bucks next possession, Raiders linebacker Lamarcus McKay intercepted a slant pass to the left side and returned it 16 yards to tie the game 14-14 with 6:25 left.
The final couple of minutes would belong to the Bucks as they pulled out to another 14-point lead. Linebacker Wydmere Garcon made an interception and scored from 60 yards away with 4:08 to go. Quarterback Derohn King connected a 23-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bryce Gowdy in the back left corner of the end zone with 46.2 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
The second half saw less scoring between both traditional powers in South Florida. Hester set up a scoring drive for the Raiders on a 57-yard catch to the Bucks 15-yard line. Four plays later, Richard threw a 15-yard pass to wide receiver Odieu Hilaire on the front right side of the end zone and cut the deficit to 28-21 with 7:33 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Bucks wrapped the contest up in the final seconds. King scrambled out of the pocket and raced up the middle for a two-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds remaining.
