The Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs topped the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders 17-10 on Friday night at Brian Piccolo Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. It was the first meeting between these Broward County teams since 2010. The loss snapped the Raiders 16-game winning streak.
There was no scoring in the first quarter. St. Thomas Aquinas(1-1) broke the scoreless tie with 4:24 left in the second. Quarterback Zion Turner found wide receiver Bralon Brown on the right side of the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Cardinal Gibbons(3-0) tied it up 7-7 at the 4:52 mark of the third quarter. Running back Kamari Moulton busted up the middle into the end zone from two yards away.
Late in the fourth quarter, STA fumbled the ball and the Chiefs recovered it at the Raiders 15-yard line. They ended the drive with an 18-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead with 3:11 remaining.
Turner had a pass picked off on the first play of the Raiders next possession and returned for a 17-yard touchdown with 3:06 to go. The Chiefs increased their lead to 17-7.
St. Thomas Aquinas quickly raced the ball down the field on their next drive. It concluded with a 21-yard field goal with 55 seconds left and they trailed 17-10.
