John Sterling Passes Away

John Sterling passed away on Monday at the age of 87. He was the radio play-by-play announcer of the New York Yankees from 1989 to 2024.
Sterling was in the broadcast booth at Fort Lauderdale Stadium in Fort Lauderdale from 1989 to 1995 when the Yankees had spring training home games at that facility. The team moved their spring training site to Tampa in 1996 and have been there for the past 30 years.
He did appear as a guest at several Miami Heat home games at Miami Arena in 1994. Sterling had a friendship with one-time Miami Heat head coach Kevin Loughery. Both worked together with the New York Nets and the New Jersey Nets from 1975 to 1980. Sterling was the radio voice of the team while Loughery was the Nets head coach.
Sterling was heard on South Florida radio for over a decade. The New York Yankees Radio Network aired on 640 WMEN-AM from 2008 to 2021 with Sterling as the radio play-by-play announcer and Susyn Waldman as the radio game analyst.
