The Miami Marlins were swept by the New York Mets in the last game of a three-game series 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field. The Mets pulled off a ninth-inning comeback with two runs and sent the Marlins home to Miami with a 0-5 record on the road trip. The last time the Marlins were swept by the Mets was in June 2010.
New York got a good start in the first inning with Ricky Nolasco on the mound for Miami. Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off with a triple to deep right-center field. He would score on a sacrifice fly by Ruben Tejada to right. The Mets had the lead after just two batters.
The Marlins would even the score at 1-1 in the third inning. Gaby Sanchez hit a lead-off solo home run to left field on a 1-0 pitch off Jonathan Niese. It was the first home run to Sanchez this season.
Miami picked up another run to take their only lead in the game during the fifth inning. Omar Infante doubled to center field then Giancarlo Stanton followed with a single to center field. Infante stopped at third and could not score on the play. Sanchez hit into a 4-6-3 double play and Infante crossed home plate.
Nolasco went seven innings and gave up one run on five hits with five strikeouts while Niese also went seven innings and let up two runs on four hits.
Heath Bell came in and replaced Randy Choate in the ninth inning. David Wright walked and advanced to second on a ground out by Lucas Duda. Ike Davis and Josh Thole both got on base with walks to load the bases. Justin Turner then got a base-on-balls to score Wright and tie the game at 2-2. Scott Hairston then grounded into fielder choice at home. Nieuwenhuis got the game-winning hit with a single to right field with Thole scoring.
