The Florida Panthers surprised the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 5-1 victory at Consol Energy Center on Monday night. It was the first time that the Cats won in Pittsburgh since early 2009. In addition, the Pens had their 13-game home win streak snapped. Pittsburgh entered the game as the points leader in the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference.
Drew Shore ended up with his first two-goal game in the NHL. He scored on a shorthanded goal at 15:46 of the first period and added a goal at 13:34 of the second period to the Panthers a 2-0 lead after two frames.
Dmitri Kulikov extended the lead for Florida(19-22-7) 3-0 with his fourth goal of the season at 1:17 of the third period. Matt Niskanen broke the shutout for Pittsburgh(34-13-2) several minutes later at 5:11.
The Panthers would score two goals in 12 seconds later in the period. Jonathan Huberdeau scored his eighth goal of the campaign with 6:10 left and Shawn Matthias followed with a tally with 5:58 remaining.
