In a battle between the two bottom teams in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference, the Florida Panthers defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in a shootout at First Niagara Center on Thursday night. The Cats have won two of their last three games as Aleksander Barkov had his six-game point streak snapped. It was the first game for the Sabres since they had their home game against Carolina canceled on Tuesday night due to weather conditions.
Buffalo(12-26-5) scored the first goal at 5:36 of the second period. The Sabres came down the ice on a four-on-two break. Matt D'Agostini dropped the puck back to Steve Ott on the left wing, he passed it to the middle where Jamie McBain made it a 1-0 lead on a wrist shot from the slot area.
Florida(17-21-6) tied the game with 10:44 left in the third period on a Brad Boyes tip-in. Tom Gilbert and Sean Bergenheim got assists on the play as Boyes compiled his 12th goal of the season.
The game went into a shootout as Boyes converted on the Cats third attempt. He fired a shot off the left post, caromed off the leg of Jhonas Enroth and across the goal line for the Panthers victory.
