The New York Mets prevailed over the Miami Marlins 5-1 at loanDepot park on Sunday. The Mets took three contests in the season-opening, four-game series. The Marlins next host the Minnesota Twins, an American League team, for their next three games.
Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga made his Major League Baseball debut. Senga picked up the winning decision as he allowed one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings.
New York(3-1) scored twice in the top of the first. Jeff McNeil grounded softly to the right side of the infield for a hit with two outs. Marlins starting pitcher Trevor Rogers made a throwing error to first and Francisco Lindor along with Pete Alonso crossed the plate.
Miami(1-3) responded in the bottom of the frame and were down 2-1. Jorge Soler doubled into the right-field corner for Luis Arraez to score.
In the fifth inning, the Mets extended their lead to 4-1. Tommy Pham smacked a 1-0 pitch to center field for a two-run homer. Tim Locastro was on first when it occurred and scored in front of him. It was the first home run by Pham with his new team.
New York made it a four-run gap 5-1 in the top of the seventh. Pham knocked in Locastro with a double past Jazz Chisholm Jr. that ended up rolling to the center-field wall.
