The #9 Florida Atlantic University Owls were eliminated in the national semifinal game of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament by the #5 San Diego State University Aztecs 72-71 at NRG Stadium in Houston on Saturday night. FAU lost the contest on a buzzer-beater by Lamont Butler with no time remaining in regulation.
Both schools were making their first ever appearances in the Final Four. The Owls became the ninth team in NCAA Tournament history to play in a Final Four matchup as a #9 seed or higher and lose.
FAU and San Diego State played close in the first 13 minutes of the first half. The Owls pulled off a 14-4 run and led 40-30 with 1:02 remaining in the first half. They headed into halftime with a 40-33 advantage.
Florida Atlantic University had a 49-40 lead five minutes into the second half. FAU went on a 9-2 spurt and was up 58-48 with 11:57 to go. San Diego State bounced back and closed it to 60-58 midway in the half. The Owls had a 71-68 advantage with 45.9 seconds remaining. Butler made a 15-foot jump shot from the right side with no time left in the second half to give the Aztecs the 72-71 victory.
