The Miami Heat held off the New York Knicks 108-101 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. The Heat lead the best-of series 1-0.
Two of the lowest seeds in the Eastern Conference faced each other in the second round. The eighth-seeded Miami Heat upset the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks while the five-seeded New York Knicks knocked off the fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers.
It is the sixth time in NBA history that the Heat and the Knicks have met in the postseason. Miami prevailed in 1997 and 2012. New York won three consecutive years in the NBA Playoffs from 1998 to 2000.
New York ran out to a 31-22 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Knicks had a 55-50 advantage at halftime.
Miami outscored the New York 31-20 during the third quarter and led 81-75 heading into the final frame. The Knicks came close to the lead 97-94 with 4:53 left in the fourth, however the Heat answered back with seven straight points to bring back to a double-digit lead.
Jimmy Butler led Miami with a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds. Bam Adebayo added 16 points along with eight rebounds. Gabe Vincent contributed 20 points while Kyle Lowry dropped by 18 points.
R.J. Barrett fell short of a double-double with 26 points and nine rebounds. Jalen Brunson scored 25 points with seven assists. Obi Toppin chalked up 18 points and eight rebounds.
