Miami starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara ended up with the loss as he allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out nine batters in six innings of work. Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen went 6 2/3 innings and surrendered no runs on two hits for the victory.
Arizona(9-7) had a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Alek Thomas singled up the middle and Corbin Carroll was able to score.
The Diamondbacks piled on four more runs in the sixth inning for a 5-0 lead. Pavin Smith drove in Jose Rojas with a base hit into right field. Christian Walker followed with a double to the right-center field wall and Smith crossed the plate.
Carroll came up next and smashed a two-run homer to center field on the first pitch for his fourth home run of the 2023 season. Walker scored in front of him on the play.
Miami(8-8) tried the break the shutout in the ninth inning. They got their first two batters on base, however Jorge Soler grounded into a double play to end the game.
