Rangers Outdistance Panthers

     The Florida Panthers fell to the New York Rangers 3-1 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. The Panthers concluded a two-game road swing. Both teams entered the game with the two worst records in the Eastern Conference. 
     There was no scoring in the first 40 minutes of play during the first two periods. It was just the second time this season that the Panthers were in a 0-0 scoreless tie at the end of the second period. 
     New York(30-35-9) made it 1-0 at the 5:10 mark of the third period. Adam Fox carried it forward and then released a shot from the top right circle. Adam Sykora deflected it it from the top of the crease past Sergei Bobrovsky for his second career goal. 
     Florida(35-35-3) trailed 2-0 on a shorthanded goal with 8:46 remaining in the third. J.T. Miller angled a pass from the Rangers blue line. Connor Sheary sprinted up the middle of the ice and snapped a shot from the high slot for his fifth goal of the season. 
     The Panthers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with 5:15 to go in the period. Fox fired the puck down the ice from his own end wall for an empty-net goal with 3:54 left in the third for his sixth goal of the campaign and gave the Blueshirts a 3-0 lead. 
     The Cats broke the shutout with 40.2 seconds remaining in the contest. Mackie Samoskevich scored his seventh goal in 2025-26 on a wrist shot from the right-circle dot by Igor Shesterkin.
