The Florida Panthers fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 at Nationwide Arena on Thursday night. The Panthers will complete their four-game road trip tomorrow at the Detroit Red Wings. The Blue Jackets snapped a nine-game winless streak against the Cats.
Columbus(32-21-8) bounced out to a 1-0 lead with the man advantage at the 5:08 mark of the first period. Ivan Provorov put in a wrist shot from the top of the zone for his seventh goal this year.
The Blue Jackets made it 2-0 with 9:10 remaining in the second period. Mathieu Olivier deflected it in from the crease area for his 10th goal of the campaign.
In the third period, Columbus extended their lead to 3-0 at 1:41. Boone Jenner scored his ninth of the season on a wrist shot from the slot area past Daniil Tarasov.
Florida(30-29-3) broke the shutout with 9:10 left in the third and were down 3-1. Aaron Ekblad released a shot from the left point and Niko Mikkola redirected it from the inner left circle by Jet Greaves for his second goal of the year.
The Panthers cut it to 3-2 on the power play with 5:16 remaining in the period. Matthew Tkachuk zipped the puck from the right wing and Ekblad angled a pass from the top of the zone. Sam Bennett then snapped a shot from above the left circle for his 23rd goal of the season.
A Gustav Forsling goal to tie the contest 3-3 was disallowed with 2:28 to go in the period because of goalie interference. Olivier placed in an empty-net goal for his second tally of the contest with 1:12 remaining and made it 4-2.
