Washington(54-46) pulled ahead 1-0 during the top of the second inning. Ryan Zimmerman led off the frame with a homer to left field on a 2-2 pitch against Dan Haren. It was the sixth home run for Zimmerman this season.
Nationals stating pitcher Max Scherzer held Miami(42-60) to three hits in seven innings and improved his record to 11-8 this year. Jonathan Papelbon picked up his first save with his new club after he was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies two days ago. Haren took the loss and dropped to 7-7 as he pitched six innings.
