The Miami Marlins were edged by the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 at Busch Stadium on Thursday. The Marlins finish their 10-game road trip before the All-Star Game break with a three-game series in San Francisco against the Giants.
Ichiro Suzuki picked up two hits in the game and passed Rod Carew for 23rd all-time in Major League Baseball history with his 3,054th base hit. He now has more hits than any other foreign-born player,
Miami(38-46) got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Dee Gordon singled, stole second and then scored on a Marceel Ozuna base hit to right-center field.
St. Louis(41-44) bounced back in the second to tie the contest 1-1. Missouri native Luke Voit whacked a solo homer to left field on a 0-2 count for his first career home run in the majors.
The Marlins regained the lead during the top of the third inning. Ozuna singled to right field which brought home Gordon on the play.
The Redbirds managed to take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the frame. Voit knocked in Matt Carpenter and Jose Martinez with a double into right. Randall Grichuk extended the Cardinals margin to 4-2 in the sixth inning when he homered to left field on a 2-2 pitch.
The Fish got run production the same way again in the top of the seventh. Ozuna collected his third RBI of the contest with a base hit into center field for Gordon to score.
