Miami(51-37) piled on four runs during the first inning and had one run in the second for a 5-0 lead. St. Louis(35-51) answered back with five runs in the top of the third to tie it 5-5.
The Cardinals were down to their last strike and last out in the top of the ninth. They got two runs on a two-run homer by rookie Jordan Walker to left field on a 3-2 pitch for their first lead in the contest 9-8.
The Marlins scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a throwing error by Cards relief pitcher Jordan Hicks for a 10-9 victory. Joey Wendle began the play hitting a soft ground ball toward the mound.
