In the first half, Argentina rocketed out to a 1-0 advantage in the 10th minute. Inter Miami CF midfielder Lionel Messi took a corner kick from the left side and Alexis Mac Allister put in a header from six yards away.
Switzerland tied it up 1-1 midway through the second half during the 67th minute. Dan Ndoye powered in a right-footed shot from seven yards out. They would be down one man when Breel Embolo was given his second yellow card of the contest in the 72nd minute of play.
The game went to added extra time for both teams. It became 2-1 for Argentina in the 112th minute when Julian Alvarez curled a right-footed, 22-yard shot into the top right corner of the cage.
Argentina extended it to a two-goal margin 3-1 in stoppage time at the 120th minute. They went on an odd-man attack and Lauturo Martinez scored from 15 yards out with his right foot into the right side of the net.
Messi had his World Cup nine-game scoring streak snapped. Argentina currently has a World Cup 12-game winning streak.
