The Marlins moved out to a 1-0 advantage in the second inning. Joe Mack smacked a solo home run to right field on the first pitch for his 10th homer of his career.
San Diego(51-53) tied it up 1-1 in the fourth inning. Jackson Merrill hit a sacrifice fly to right-center field which scored Manny Machado.
The Padres took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Machado singled into left field and Xander Bogaerts crossed the plate.
Miami(52-52) evened it up 2-2 inthe bottom of the fifth. Heriberto Hernandez smashed a solo homer to center field on a 0-1 count for his 14th home run of the season.
The Friars regained the lead 4-2 during the top of the eighth. Luis Rengifo powered a pinch-hit, two- run homer on a 0-1 pitch over the right-field wall for his second home run of the year. JaseBowen scored in front of him on the play.
