Flyers Edge Panthers

The Florida Panthers played their only home game in a two-week stretch on Tuesday night at the Bank Atlantic Center, but they lost to the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in a shootout. The Panthers took charge on their first power play. Following two close range shots by Stephen Weiss, Brian Campbell passed from the left point to Mikael Samuelsson who fired a slap shot from the right side through traffic at 2:49. It was his third goal this season. The Flyers came back with their own power play goal at 10:35 when a shot by Brayden Schenn from the slot rolled over the back of Scott Clemmensen and into the net to tie the game. Philadelphia Flyers increased their lead on a give-and-go play at 17:59. Jakub Voracek skated across the blue line, passed off to Tom Sistito to his right and redirected the return pass in the slot area. In the second period, Florida evened the game 2-2 when they got a two-on-one breakaway. Kris Versteeg streaked through the right circle and skated by Sergei Bobrovsky in the crease area. He then placed a blind backhand pass to the trailer, then Tomas Fleischmann followed with a backhand shot into the open net at 15:40. Neither team scored in the third period, however Fleischmann hit the left post on a left circle shot during the Panthers second power play with just over six minutes left. Only one person scored during the shootout and it was Flyers center Claude Giroux. He scored on the second attempt for Philadelphia as he faked the backhand shot and changed to the forehand for the winner. The Panthers drop out of first place in the Southeast Division as the Washington Capitals now hold the top spot. Florida is now in seventh place in the Eastern Conference as they head to the All-Star Game break.

North Shines In Battle Of Florida

Domination was word in The Battle of Florida as the North team scored 27 first-quarter points as they wiped out the South team 51-3 at FAU Stadium on Saturday night. Unfortunately, it turned out not to be a competitive game between some of the top seniors that have just finished their college careers. It was also a match that involved Bobby Bowden(North) and Howard Schnellenberger(South), two of the most recognized head coaches that led Florida-based colleges. The first possession of the North was led by former Glades Day and Jacksonville quarterback Josh McGregor who led his team down the field. Florida State running back Jermaine Thomas finished off the 11-play, 85 yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give the North a 7-0 lead at 10:17. The South followed going three-and-out. McGregor again drove the North across the gridiron and ended the drive on a one-yard sneak for a touchdown at 6:40 to increase their lead 14-0. The drive took eight plays for 55 yards in 3:06. The North held the South to another three-and-out as former St. Thomas Aquinas and FIU quarterback Wes Carroll was unable to generate any offense in the South's first two possessions. The North continued to dominate the first quarter as Florida State running back Ty Jones launched himself over the top of the pile for a one-yard touchdown with 2:17 left in the first quarter for a North 20-0 lead. The drive went seven plays for 64 yards in 2:38. The South punted again and De'Andre Presley of Appalachian State returned the ball for a 65-yard touchdown and a 27-0 lead for the North. Chris Hart of the South fumbled deep in his own end at the beginning of the second quarter. East Carolina quarterback Dominique Davis struck on his first play in the game as he found Florida State wide receiver Bert Reed in the middle of the end zone on a 21-yard touchdown pass to widen the gap 34-0 at 14:43. The North added to lead less than four minutes later as Nick Cattoi of Central Florida kicked a 41-yard field goal. With 2:05 left in the second, Boca Raton and Wisconsin cornerback Antonio Fenelus intercepted a pass in the end zone in front of the hometown crowd. It was one of the few positive notes for the South in the first half. Things didn't change in the second half as the South went three-and-out on their first drive. On the third play of the North drive, former South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia found Louisville receiver Josh Bellamy wide open down the right side for a 60-yard touchdown reception and a 44-0 lead. On their next possession, Kevin Elliott of Florida A&M caught a 24-yard reception from Garcia for a score at 5:01 to continue the onslaught 51-0. There was a running clock for the remainder of the contest. The South broke the shutout with 12:43 left in the fourth quarter as Alan Gendreau made a 32-yard field goal. Josh McGregor won the MVP award for North completing 11-of-12 passes for 123 yards and rushed for one touchdown. North Alabama linebacker Marcus Dowtin took the honor for the South with seven total tackles.

Bruins Get By Panthers

The defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins finally appeared at the Bank Atlantic Center on Monday night and defeated the Florida Panthers 3-2 in a shootout. The Bruins struck within the first two minutes of the game. Following a turnover in the neutral zone, Benoit dumped a forehand pass behind to Patrice Bergeron at the top of zone where his wrist shot sailed over the right shoulder of Scott Clemmensen. The Panthers outshot Boston 8-1 ten minutes into the game. Things changed for Florida in the second period as they tied the game at 8:28. Mike Weaver fed the puck across to Jason Garrison on the left point, he fired a slap shot and went off the left skate of Dennis Seidenberg. Boston regained the lead on a five-on-three power play at 14:40 when Bergeron put in his second goal as he redirected a shot in front by Tyler Seguin from the high slot. At the end of the Bruins back-to-back power plays, Tomas Kopecky threaded a lead pass to Shawn Matthias in the neutral zone as he was coming out of the penalty box. Matthias skated in on a breakaway on Tuukka Rask and place a forehand shot between the legs of the goalie to tie the game at 2-2. Stephen Weiss also was credited for an assist on the play. He becomes the all-time leader in Florida Panthers history with 232 assists passing Olli Jokinen. There was no scoring in the third period and overtime so the game went to a shootout. Both squads missed on their first two attempts. Weiss scored on the Panthers third attempt as he faked a forehand and put the backhand behind Rask. Bergeron evened it up was a shot to the stick side of Clemmensen. Mikael Samuelsson, on his first shootout attempt this season, lost control of the puck as he was ready to shoot. Pittsburgh was without Sidney Crosby who skated in practice earlier in the day. The Penguins held a five-to-zero shot advantage six minutes into the game and 15-3 after 16 minutes. On the Panthers first power play, Matt Cooke intercepted a pass by Stephen Weiss at the Penguins line and skated down the ice with a one-on-one breakaway. His wrist shot went off the blocker pad of Scott Clemmensen for the save. The Penguins hit the left post twice on their first power play as James Neal and Evgeni Malkin both fired shots from the left circle. With 1:42 left in the first period, a pinball play in the Penguins zone led to Chris Kunitz getting a breakaway on Clemmensen. He went with a backhand shot that hit the left post and bounced out. Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead at 1:49 of the second period when Clemmensen misplayed the puck behind his own net. Matt Cooke placed a backhand pass to the low slot where Steve Sullivan shot it into an open net. The Penguins added to their lead with under one minute remaining in the period. Malkin had a two-on-one breakaway and blasted a shot from the left circle where was saved. He got the rebound beyond the goal line to the left of the net and threw a backhand toward the net and it slipped behind Clemmensen. Pittsburgh continued their scoring spree just 36 seconds into the third period. Following a Weiss turnover in the offensive zone, Tyler Kennedy finished up a three-man weave play by nailing a slap shot from the right circle. Florida broke the shutout at 6:55 as Michal Repik had the puck redirect off his body in the slot area after a slap shot by Jason Garrison from the blue line.
