Roberto Luongo made his first appearance in net with the Florida Panthers for the first time since April 2006 as they shut out the Buffalo Sabres 2-0 on Friday night at BB&T Center. Luongo gathered his 66th career shutout and his 27th as a Panther. He has the all-time record in career wins and shutouts for the franchise.
The Panthers capitalized at the end of a five-minute boarding penalty on Marcus Foligno with a power-play goal at 11:11. Scottie Upshall sent a lead pass to Jesse Winchester and he snapped a shot from the slot area for his ninth goal of the season.
In the second period, Sean Bergenheim was awarded a penalty shot as he came in alone on net and was slashed from behind by Drew Stafford. His attempt was stopped on a poke check by Michael Neuvirth, who made his Buffalo(19-36-8) after he was acquired from Washington.
Florida(24-32-7) was able convert on their sixth power play early in the third period. Brad Boyes gave a pass from the left circle to Dmitry Kulikov at the top of the zone and he fired a slapshot through traffic for his seventh tally.
Luongo improved his record to 20-16-6 as he stopped 25 shots while Neuvirth dropped to 4-7-2 as he made 42 saves. The Cats were 2-for-8 on the power play and the Sabres went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
