WPLG-TV Channel 10 sportscaster Victor Oquendo has been promoted to a news anchor position at the station. He will work on the 4:30pm and 5:30pm newscasts. WINK-TV sports director and sports anchor Clayton Ferraro in Fort Myers is expected to replace Oquendo as the weekend sports anchor.
It has been a trend in the Miami television market over the last 20 years to move a sports anchor to a news anchor spot on the broadcast. WTVJ-TV Channel 6 first did it with longtime sportscaster Tony Segreto during the 1990's. It was later done by WPLG for Steve Alvarez and by WFOR-TV Channel 4 when they shifted Khambrel Marshall. During the past ten years, WFOR took Jim Berry from sports to news and returned him back to his prior position while WTVJ promoted Adam Kuperstein from sports to the news desk in December 2011 and he is currently their evening news co-anchor.
