The Florida Panthers ended a five-game road trip with a 5-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night. Florida, who went 1-3-1 during the five-game stint, dropped out of first place in the Atlantic Division. The last time they were in second place was on December 28 one point behind the Montreal Canadiens.
It was the final time this season that the Cats face a Western Conference opponent. The Panthers have played seven of their last eight games and nine of their last 11 games against clubs from the Western Conference.
Arizona put in two goals early in the second period as Jordan Martinook scored a shorthanded tally at 0:29 and Alex Tanguay followed with his first goal with his new team at 5:36.
Aaron Ekblad cut the margin for Florida to 2-1 with 2:32 left in the period with his 13th goal of the season on an assist by Jussi Jokinen.
In the third period, Shane Doan added to the Coyotes lead on the power play then Tanguay picked his second goal of the game at 5:35.
