The Florida Panthers ran into a buzzsaw on Saturday at TD Garden as they were blasted by the Boston Bruins 5-1. Florida dropped to five points behind the New Jersey Devils for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Boston moved ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning for first place in the Atlantic Division.
It was the final game of a four-game road swing for the Panthers, who have played seven of their last eight games away from home. The Cats return to Sunrise for a four-game home stand on Monday night against Carolina.
Things started off right for Florida(39-30-8) in the early part of the first period. Keith Yandle put a shot on net that Tuukka Rask saved. Jamie McGinn jammed at the puck several times from the left of the crease until it went in at the 4:59 mark.
An avalanche of scoring by Boston(49-17-11) would begin for them with 8:45 left in the first. David Krejci made a spinning wrist shot from the right point and Nick Holden redirected it from the top of the crease past James Reimer.
The Bruins made it 2-1 with 5:54 to go. Ryan Donato took the puck away from Alexander Petrovic behind the Panthers cage and backhanded a pass in front. Jake DeBrusk put in a one-time shot.
In the second period, Boston continued to roll with three more goals. Krejci feed a pass to Donato and he put in a tally from close range at 1:32. Patrice Bergeron connected with a power-play goal with 6:20 remaining and DeBrusk compiled his second goal of the contest with 3:28 left in the second.
