Panthers Get Second Place From Lightning

The Florida Panthers completed their 27th regular season in the National Hockey League with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at BB&T Center on Monday night. The Panthers ended up with second place in the Central Division and will host the Lightning in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs later this week.
The Panthers matched their season-high winning streak of six games to finish off the regular season. Chris Driedger collected his third shutout of the season. Keith Yandle played in his 922nd consecutive NHL contest and is 42 games behind Doug Jarvis for the all-time record.
Florida(37-14-5) took a 1-0 lead with 4:41 remaining in the first period. Juho Lammikko passed from the red line to Mason Marchment. He dropped a pass at the top of the Tampa Bay(36-17-3) zone and MacKenzie Weegar snapped a shot from the high slot past Andrei Vasilevskiy for his sixth goal of the campaign. Weegar was able to extend his point streak to three games.
The Lightning made a major blunder on the power play midway in the second period. Vasilevskiy handled the puck behind his own cage and Lammikko stole it. He made a wraparound forehand shot at the 8:23 mark for his fourth goal this season. It was his first tally since March 3 against Columbus and first multi-point performance in his NHL career.
In the third period, the Cats made it a three-goal cushion at 2:27. Carter Verhaeghe carried the puck from the neutral zone into the Lightning. He fired a snap shot from the slot area for his 18th goal of the season. Anthony Duclair and Aleksander Barkov were credited with assists on the play. Barkov now has a four-game point streak.
The Panthers made it 4-0 with 5:53 left in the frame. Yandle pushed the puck from the right wing and it went off the stick of Radko Gudas in the top right circle. Alex Wennberg blasted a slap shot from the top of the zone for his fourth goal in the last two contests. Yandle picked up his 600th NHL point to become the 10th defenseman born in the United States to reach the mark.
